COLUMBUS, Ohio – Men’s track and field graduate student Tyler Johnson has been named Ohio State’s 2021-22 men’s recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The award was established by the conference in 1915 and was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics.
The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career.
Johnson had a strong indoor season this year as he was earned a spot on the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCA) All-American Second Team. He was named the Big Ten Male Track Athlete of the Championships and earned All-Big Ten First Team recognition. Johnson won two individual Big Ten Championships at the indoor conference meet – the 400m (45.31) and the 200m (20.73). He led the Buckeye men with five wins during the indoor season. Johnson most recently began his outdoor season last weekend by setting a meet record with a win in the 400m (44.95).
In 2021, Johnson was an indoor USTFCCCA All-American in the 400m and 4x400m relay, an outdoor All-American in the 400m and an outdoor honorable mention in the 4x100m relay. He was named Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Championships and shared the honor following the conclusion of the outdoor championships. Johnson won three Big Ten Indoor Championships (200m, 400m, 4x400m relay). He was an Academic All-Big Ten Honoree and named an OSU Scholar Athlete as well.
Johnson has earned recognition as an All-American all four years as a Buckeye as he’s qualified for the NCAA Championships each of those years. The kinesiology major has been named an OSU Scholar Athlete once again as he begins his final outdoor season.
