Spring Break Trip Starts With Five Games at Coastal Carolina

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following its lone off week of the 2023 season, the Ohio State softball team begins its busiest stretch of the season this weekend with five games at the Beach Chicken Brawl on the campus of Coastal Carolina.
The Buckeyes’ slate begins with two games on Friday – 10 a.m. vs. Canisius 2:30 p.m. vs. host Coastal Carolina – and two more on Saturday (10 a.m. vs. Canisius and 12:30 p.m. vs. Houston Christian). The weekend concludes Sunday with a single game at 9:30 p.m. vs. Houston Christian.

Buckeyes in a Nutshell
- After winning three of four games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Feb. 24-26, the Buckeyes are 6-6 overall.
- Ohio State’s wins included a 12-0 five-inning victory against CSUN, a 6-0 shutout of Oregon State and 5-4 comeback victory over San Diego State.
- Among players with 30 or more at-bats, sophomore Kami Kortokrax (.361) and Melina Wilkison (.359) lead the team in batting.
- Wilkson also has a team-best nine RBI and has scored five runs.
- Fifth-year senior Meggie Otte has the best batting average of her career thus far (.294) and in Ohio State’s last game vs. Utah hit her first home run of the season.
- Ohio State’s pitching rotation includes five players who have seen action so far this season.
- Allison Smith, a junior, leads the team in innings (36.0), strikeouts (41), wins (three) and earned run average (3.50).
- Emily Ruck, also a junior, is next with 19.0 innings pitched while freshman Lexi Paulsen picked up her first career win in the 5-4 comeback vs. San Diego State.
- Kennedy Kay, a redshirt freshmen, and Julia Miller, a true freshmen, have also seen action.
13 Games In Nine Days
- Ohio State’s trip to Conway, S.C. is the start of a 13-game, nine-day Spring Break trip.
- Following its five-game weekend, the Buckeyes return to action with a doubleheader at Charleston Southern on Tuesday and a single game at College of Charleston on Wednesday.
- From there, Ohio State heads to Greenville, N.C. at the Jolly Roger Invite at East Carolina with Cleveland State, Presbyterian and East Carolina.
Scouting the Competition
- Canisius, the MAAC champions last season, is 7-5 and coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Campbell Invitational.
- The Golden Griffins were 32-18 overall last season and 16-4 in the MAAC.
- Coastal Carolina checks in at 17-3 at the beginning of the week with wins in four of five games at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. last weekend.
- Houston Christian lost two one-run games last Sunday and enters the weekend with a 9-10 overall record.
