Kayla Ledbetter, a 2014 graduate of Miami University and catcher for the RedHawks, has been hired as a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes, head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly announced last July.
“I am pleased to welcome Kayla Ledbetter to our Buckeye softball coaching staff,” said Kovach Schoenly. “I envision Kayla impacting many players in her coaching career and we are thrilled and excited for her to start that journey with us.”
“Growing up in Columbus, it’s every little kid’s dream to be a Buckeye and now I have that opportunity,” said Ledbetter, who is from Gahanna. “It feels like a dream come true that all the pieces fell into place. I’m very appreciative the coaching staff for giving me a chance to be a part of something as special as Ohio State softball.”
Ledbetter, who was recruited to Miami by Kovach Schoenly and played for her during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, was a four-year starting catcher for the RedHawks. She compiled a career batting average of .304 with 143 hits and 89 RBI in 179 games. Her best statistical year came in 2013 when he hit .336, had nine doubles and 33 RBI on her way to earning first team All-MAC honors. In 2012, Ledbetter was a second team All-MAC selection and was an integral part of Miami’s run to the conference tournament championship, garnering MAC All-Tournament Team honors as the RedHawks won three games in 24 hours to gain the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Ledbetter spent the 2015 season as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Gahanna Lincoln High School. She helped the Lions (23-8) reach the OHSAA Division I, Region 3 final.
