Quarterbacks talk day 13 of fall training camp and team progress ahead of the season’s start. Visit Camp Central for more.
On C.J. running the ball:
“I think C.J. does a great job of doing what he’s asked to do, he’ll do that to the best of his ability. He’s always been able to run, his first touchdown was a long run against Michigan state. If the play calls for him to run the ball, we’ll definitely run the ball.”
On changes to workouts coming into C.J.’s second year:
“I think the one thing you appreciate about C.J. is it wouldn’t have mattered what kind of year he had last year. He wants to get better, and he’s always trying to find something to get better and is always trying to work on his craft and get better.”
On C.J. being voted captain:
“Man, that was awesome. There’s no bigger honor than being a captain and being voted by your peers. He’s done a great job, his vocal presence, having a great offseason, the team just gravitates around him. He’s doing a great job when it comes to the leadership aspect.”
On chemistry with the receivers:
“I definitely feel like the chemistry has been built in the spring, summer workouts, and private workouts with us. Then that chemistry is building more and more in camp, which is a plus for us.”
On what he wants the team to be this year:
“I want us to be us. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody, we don’t have to prove anything to anybody. At the end of the day it’s about Ohio State. It’s not about anybody else. That’s just how I feel. If Ohio State shows up as Ohio State, I think we’re tough to beat.”
On his approach to being a captain:
“I’m going to approach it how I have been since I’ve been here. I always feel like by God’s grace I was a natural born leader and he blessed me with that ability. I feel like I can relate to a lot of people in different situations, so that’s what I’m going to keep doing. I’ll keep being myself, unapologetically me, and understanding that my role and responsibility at Ohio State is to be the captain of the team and be a leader.”
On his pre-season focus:
“We’re adding new stuff every day, so I just have to wrap my head around all that and know the defense. There’s a lot that goes on offensively that I didn’t have that role in high school, so it’s a big learning curve, but that’s really the main focus.”
On C.J. Stroud:
“He’s a very vocal leader. The whole team is very surrounded by him and listens to what he says and would do anything for him. The main thing I admire from him is how much he knows offensively. He has such a good understanding and he can really see things that I wouldn’t have seen. He really anticipates things instead of reacting to things and I think that’s the biggest thing I look at.”
“Last year, the chance to play was huge. Getting that opportunity to go out and get game experience really did me well. If the opportunity to play comes this year, I know I’ll be ready because I’ll know what to expect as a starter and how to approach the game.”
“I think you can practice and watch film all you want, but nothing really compares to actually getting out there and playing a real game. That experience last year was awesome and allowed me to get out there and learn. Getting into the flow of the game really helped and pushed my progress to becoming a better quarterback to the next level.”
