Duo becomes 21st/22nd Buckeyes bestowed with honor
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brandon Cannon and Ben Davino are the 21st and 22nd Ohio State wrestlers all-time to earn "Black Shirt" status within the Ohio State program. The honor was announced Thursday.
Cannon, a redshirt sophomore, placed second at the 2024 Big Ten Championships at 157 to earn a No. 5 seed at the 2024 NCAA Championships.
Overall, he owns a 30-5 record and is 6-2 in duals, including a 2-1 record in league duals. He opened the 2024-25 season with a 5-0 record and first-place finish at the Cleveland State Open. He added another title with a 5-0 mark at the Edinboro Open last February.
Davino, a redshirt freshman, posted a 14-1 record a year ago. He was 4-0 in duals and 2-0 in Big Ten duals.
In his first collegiate competition, he posted a 5-0 record at the 2024 Clarion Open at 133, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
No. 5 Ohio State opens the 2025-26 season Nov. 2 at the 2025 Clarion Open. The first dual competition of the season is at Tennessee-Chattanooga Nov. 9 before the Buckeyes take part in the National Duals Invitational Nov. 15-16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ohio State opens against Wyoming in that event.
The first home dual of the season is against Kent State Nov. 20 at the Covelli Center.
The OSU Black Shirts
All OSU wrestlers training inside the Jennings Wrestling Facility began wearing gray shirts in 2019-20. Only those individuals deserving of elite distinction will be bestowed a 'black shirt' and earn the privilege of wearing black in The Jennings. Once donning a black shirt, a student-athlete then joins the coaching staff in determining future 'black shirt worthy' teammates.
Becoming a Black Shirt ...
* Rewards those who are doing things that in our program are non-negotiable - J Jaggers.
*Nominees must receive unanimous approval from coaching staff and current "Black Shirts"
* Must outwardly display a deep love for what you do -- elite discipline, grit, selflessness, excellence
* Help team become more conscious of making decisions that will help the team to the next level
