
Several Buckeyes Compete at Olympic Trials This Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will be represented by nine former and current Buckeyes at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials this week at Penn State. Competition will be held Friday and Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania. The competition will be aired live on Peacock and USA Network.

Nick Boykin, Brady Koontz, Joey McKenna, Jesse Mendez, Kollin Moore, Tate Orndorff, Fritz Schierl, Gary Traub and Kyle Snyder all will compete for a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic team.

McKenna and Mendez will battle in the 65kg freestyle bracket.

A 2019 Ohio State captain, McKenna is a three-time All-American with two of his honors earned at Ohio State in 2018-19. He finished third at 141-pounds in the NCAA Championships in 2018 and was runner-up in 2019.

Mendez recently completed his sophomore season with an NCAA title at 141 in Kansas City. He is a two-time All-American with a sixth place NCAA finish as a freshman in 2023.

Snyder and Moore will contend at 97kg in freestyle.

Snyder is a three-time NCAA champion at heavyweight and a four-time All-American with a second-place finish at 197 in 2015. Snyder won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2018. He owns Gold (2016) and Silver (2020) medals in Olympic competition to date.

Moore is a four-time All-American (2017-20) and the 2020 Big Ten Medal of honor winner. He owns second, third and fourth-place finishes at 197 in the NCAA championships. The 2020 tournament was canceled (Covid). Â
Traub, who lettered at Ohio State from 2018-21, will battle in the 125kg freestyle competition. He qualified at heavyweight for the canceled 2020 NCAA championships with the Buckeyes.Â

In the Greco-Roman competition, Boykin and Orndorff are in the 97kg bracket with Schierl competing at 87kg. Koontz is in the 60kg bracket.

Orndorff, a 2023 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, qualified for the NCAA championships three times as a Buckeye (2021-23) and finished as an All-American in 2021 (8th).

Boykin, who primarily trained for Greco-Roman competitions during his time in Columbus, recently graduated following the 2024 season.

Schierl was an Ohio State captain in 2022 and letterwinner from 2018-22. He earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors in both 2021 and 2022. He finished his Ohio State career with a record of 72-28.
Koontz is a three-time letterwinner with the Buckeyes (2019-21-22). He primarily trained for Greco-Roman events during his time at Ohio State. Â
The trials format: on Friday, a single-elimination challenge tournament is held in each weight class to advance wrestlers to Saturday's best-of-three finals series in each division.
The early rounds run from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET. The challenge tournament semifinals and finals are 6:30-10 p.m.

On Saturday, the early session — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. — includes the first match of the best-of-three finals in the 13 weight classes that are already qualified for the Olympics and the first two matches of the best-of-three finals in the five classes not yet qualified for the Olympics. Consolation matches will also be held.
Saturday's late session — 6:30-10 p.m. — will include the second matches in the 13 classes already qualified for the Olympics, and if necessary third matches in all 18 classes.
