Buckeyes Take 2nd at 2023 Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio— Ohio State's bid to defend its Big Ten Championship from 2022 fell just short Sunday at Eagle Creek State Park in Indianapolis. The Buckeyes entered the final race of the day needing to finish first or second to win the 2023 Big Ten title but was edged out at the finish line for second by Indiana (6:25.565) to finish third (6:25.837). Michigan won the final event of the championship, the First Varsity Eight Race, with a time of 6:21.292.
The Buckeyes ended the day with 169 points behind Michigan (174) for the 2023 conference crown.
Ohio State claimed first or second in the first six races of the day. The Second Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four and First Novice Eight all won titles with the Second Novice Eight, Third Varsity Four and First Varsity Four taking second.
The Buckeyes were the No. 3 seed in the First Varsity Eight race, the final event of the 2023 Big Ten Regatta. Ohio State was in a tight battle for second behind leader Michigan at 500 meters. The Buckeyes were third after 1,000 meters behind Michigan and Rutgers. Ohio State took over second behind the Wolverines at 1,500 meters but the Buckeyes finished third behind Michigan and Indiana.
Ohio State entered the Second Varsity Eight race as the No. 2 seed. Rutgers, Michigan and Ohio State battled for the early lead with Michigan leading by less than a foot over the Buckeyes at 500 meters. At 1,000 meters the Buckeyes took a lead by less than a second. The lead increased for the Buckeyes by about two seconds over the Wolverines at 1,500 meters. The Buckeyes did not relinquish the lead to win with a time of 6:34.230 ahead of Michigan at 6:37.571.
In the first of the NCAA qualifying races, Ohio State entered as the No. 1 seed in the First Varsity Four. Iowa got out to the early lead before Michigan took the lead at 500 meters. Michigan led Rutgers at 1,000 meters with Ohio State third. At 1,500 meters the Top 3 were unchanged. The Wolverines took the race with a time of 7:18.086 ahead of the Buckeyes at 7:20.152.
The Buckeyes earned the No. 1 seed in the Second Varsity Four race. Rutgers jumped to the early lead with the Buckeyes battling several others for second. The Scarlet Knights continued as the front runner at 1,000 meters with the Buckeyes about two seconds back. Ohio State started its move over the third 500 meters and took the lead at 1,500 meters by three tenths of a second. The Buckeyes continued their charge to win with a time of 7:25.276 ahead of Rutgers at 7:28.759.
In the third race of the competition, Ohio State's Third Varsity Four was the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Rutgers. Michigan was the leader at 500 meters. The Buckeyes and Rutgers were battling for second. The Scarlet Knights led at 1,000 meters with the Buckeyes edging Michigan. Rutgers built a boat-length lead at 1,500 meters ahead of Ohio State and Michigan. Rutgers took the win with a time of 7:33.440. The Buckeyes finished second at 7:38.135.
In the First Novice Eight battle, the Buckeyes were the No. 2 seed behind the No. 1 seeded Michigan Wolverines. At 1,000 meters, Ohio State and Michigan were separated by less than a third of a boat length with the Wolverines in the lead. The Buckeyes closed in on the lead at 1,500 meters. It was even with 250 meters to go before the Buckeyes got the win with a time of 6:47.566 ahead of Michigan at 6:48.712.
In the first race of the day, Ohio State, the No. 1 seed in the Second Novice Eight event, the Buckeyes and Michigan took the early lead and were about even through 500 meters. The Wolverines led by less than a second at 500 meters. Michigan built its lead to just over a second at 1,000 meters. The Buckeyes took the lead at 1,500 meters by less than a second but the Wolverines rallied late to win with a time of 6:54.903 just ahead of the Buckeyes at 6:54.991.
Ohio State has won the Big Ten title 10 times, including eight of the last 12 years in which the championships have been held. The 2020 season was canceled because of COVID.
The Buckeyes finished second in 2019 after winning the title six-consecutive times from 2013-18.
This is the fourth season under the direction of head coach Kate Sweeney, who guided the Buckeyes to an eighth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships and to a Big Ten Title at the 2022 Big Ten Championships last year. In all, Ohio State owns 10 Big Ten championships and 52 individual boat titles.
The 2023 NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 26-28 at the Camden Country Boathouse in Pennsauken, N.J.

The Big Ten announced its 2023 All-Big Ten teams during the championship ceremonies.
Anneta Kyridou was named 2023 First Team All-Big Ten while Jessy Vermeer and Maria Kyridou earned second team honors. Morgan Miller was named Ohio State's Sportsmanship Award winner for 2023.
Annetta Kyridou is a two-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree after earning the honor as a rooking in 2022. Maria Kyridou also was a first-teamer in 2022.
