MINNEAPOLIS – The Big Ten Conference hosted the 2023 women's basketball media day in Minneapolis at the Target Center, home to the Minnesota Lynx and the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 2024 women's basketball conference tournament will take place at the Target Center in March.
Head Coach Kevin McGuff and graduate guards Jacy Sheldon and Celeste Taylor as well as redshirt senior guard Rikki Harris represented the Buckeyes. This year all women's programs attended media day on Monday, while all men's programs will attend media day on Tuesday.
"I think we have the best league in women's basketball," McGuff said. "Right now, we have great coaches so every night you show up you're going to play against a really well-prepared team. We've had a lot of teams, including Ohio State, who have benefited from people in their COVID year who have come back and so we have a lot of talented, experienced players across the league. It was really tough last year and it's going to be even tougher this year."
Each program's head coach held a press conference with the entire group of media present and also had open time with the media, as did the student-athletes. The head coaches and student-athletes also participated in interviews with Big Ten social/digital media, NCAA.com, Sirius XM, CBS, NBC and live from the BTN studio.
"It seems like we're going to have a fantastic team," Harris said. "I love it. From Jacy [Sheldon] and I coming in together and Madison [Greene] too, who's sadly been injured so she's at a different stage. She works hard every day [to get healthy] and she's ready to compete. I can't wait for the season to start. It's just amazing. Everyone is willing to give it their all for each other."
"I think we're a little bit further ahead defensively than we were a year ago," McGuff said. "Offensively, we look good. Because we're a little better defensively, we're getting more transition opportunities so the offense is coming in a little bit different ways than it did a year ago."
The Buckeyes open the 2023-24 season against USC at the Naismith Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas, Nev. on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. ET. Ohio State hosts IUPUI on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Buckeyes' home opener. View the full 2023-24 schedule HERE.
