Fort Benning, Ga.–Current and former members of the Ohio State pistol program traveled south for Part II of the Olympic Trials, also known as Spring Selection. Freshman Katelyn Abeln finished third overall in the two-part Olympic Trials (more on that below) and will be the first alternate for Team USA’s Sport Pistol team as the top-two competitors in each discipline were named to the Olympic squads. Anthony McCollum, a 2019 Ohio State graduate, earned second alternate status for Men’s Air Pistol with his fourth-place overall tally.
SCORING PROCESS
Air Pistol
Part I (Winter Airgun Championships in December) + Part II (Spring Selection) = overall score
Sport Pistol
Part I (Fall Selection in October) + Part II (Spring Selection) = overall score
*Both Part I and II scores are tallied from each competitors performances on Day 1, Day 2 and the Finals.
Assistant coach Anthony Lutz and junior Samuel Gens also competed in the Olympic Trials, both in Men’s Air Pistol. Lutz finished eighth overall with Gens close behind in 10thplace.
In addition to her third place effort in Sport Pistol, Abeln also added a third-place finish for Women’s Air Pistol (Team USA did not qualify for the Olympics in Women’s Air Pistol, however).
