COLLEGE PARK, Md. – It was a tale of two halves for Ohio State on Monday night in College Park and unfortunately, the Buckeyes came out on the wrong end of a 72-62 decision against No. 17 Maryland.
OSU came into the game averaging just over six three-pointers made per game and connected on six in the first half alone, leading to a 42-35 lead at halftime. But the Maryland full court pressure in the second half took the Buckeyes out of their rhythm. OSU turned the ball over 15 times in the second half and shot just 28 percent. That allowed the Terrapins erase the deficit and pull away for a key conference victory.
"I thought we shot the ball well in the first half and we played like the team we're capable of being," said head coach Kevin McGuff. "We just didn't take care of the ball in the second half and really didn't give ourselves a chance. Give Maryland credit. They were the tougher team in the second half."
Three Buckeyes scored in double figures as sophomore Dorka Juhasz and freshman Jacy Sheldon each scored 12 points while junior Braxtin Miller chipped-in with 11 points.
Sophomore Aaliyah Patty finished with seven points and was one-off her career-high with nine rebounds. She also had three assists and three steals.
Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year Kaila Charles showed why she is an All-America candidate as she scored a game-high 28 points on 13-of-19 shooting.
The teams played a highly competitive first 20 minutes. The Buckeyes led 25-24 after the first quarter and following a 9-0 run over a two minute span in the second, they held a 42-31 advantage. The Terps scored the final four points and the teams headed to the break with OSU in front 42-35.
The third quarter was where the Terrapins took control. They forced 12 OSU turnovers and scored 14 of their 18 points in the quarter off of those turnovers. The Terps doubled-up the Buckeyes 18-9 in the quarter and then used a 13-0 run early in the fourth to shove the lead to 13 and effectively, seal the deal.
This was the first game in six days for the Buckeyes as they will return home to host rival Michigan on Thursday and Penn State on Sunday. The game against the Wolverines is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised on BTN.
