Lorraine Hack made the cross country journey from Olympia, Wash., and the rest of her Buckeye teammates are glad she did. Possessing one of the brightest smiles on the team, Lorraine has excelled in and out of the pool. The senior is a three-time All-American and helped deliver OSU its 29th national title in 2015. The education major has also taken a lead role in the team’s community service efforts in addition to being a three-time winner of the academic award from USA Synchro.
What was your favorite part of Bucks Go Pro?
The opportunity to network with different organizations and companies, as well as making many new friends.
What is the best piece of advice you received from BGP?
Just get things done, and always be a giver in situations.
Which site visit did you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed going to the South Side Learning Center the most!
What was your group project, and what was your role in it?
I was part of the Peer Educators project and we all collaborated to come up with a new schedule for training topics, social events, and creating a new budget for the upcoming year.
How did you decide to come to OSU?
There are not many schools that have synchronized swimming programs, but luckily Ohio State is one of them, and I was recruited to be a part of the team here. It was the best decision I could have made.
How long have you been doing your sport?
I have been doing synchronized swimming since I was 10 years old, so about 11 years now.
Do you have any pre-game/match superstitions or rituals?
Before all of our meets we always sing Carmen Ohio as a team. I also have a pump-up playlist I listen to get myself ready to compete.
What is your favorite part about your sport?
I really love the team camaraderie that is built from swimming together for four hours a day, everyone just becomes so close and we all rely on each other to get the job done.
What is the hardest thing about your sport?
The fact that you can’t breathe makes synchro relatively challenging, or the fact that you aren’t allowed to touch the bottom.
How do you balance athletics and academics?
I struggled with this when I first came to college, but it’s really just about creating and sticking to a schedule for yourself and making sure you stay ahead of the game with school work so you don’t get behind.
Why did you choose your major?
I chose education because I really love helping others, and since I also enjoy working with kids, it was the perfect thing for me.
What is your favorite study spot on campus?
I really like studying at the Union or at off-campus coffee shops.
What is your favorite class you have taken here so far?
I don’t have just one favorite class, but my favorite ones have been psychology, comparative studies, and most of my major classes actually.
What is a fun fact about you that not many people know about?
I love scary movies and crime thriller TV shows.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi.
Who do you most admire and why?
I really admire my best friend from home because she always encourages me to live life in the moment and just go out and try new experiences.
Describe OSU in one word.
