COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ameryst Alston led three Buckeyes in double-figures with 19 points as Ohio State defeated Old Dominion, 75-60, in the first of three games in three days of the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Value City Arena.
The win moves Ohio State to 4-1 on the season while ODU falls to 2-2.
Raven Ferguson added 14 points and Darryce Moore recorded another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth affair for the first 6 minutes as both teams traded leads in the early going. Ohio State finally took control when a 3-pointer by Maleeka Kynard at the 12:43 mark sparked an 16-4 run to put the Buckeyes up by 12 with 7:19 left in the half. The Buckeyes led by 10 at the half, 36-26.
Ohio State led by as much as 23 points with 10 minutes left in the second half, thanks in large part to its defense, which forced 24 ODU turnovers which led to 24 Ohio State points.
“I thought our defense was much better today and I think that was a reflection of us being able to play more people,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “We were a little more fresh out there and we were able to put a little more pressure on the ball, which I thought was disruptive to Old Dominion.”
Every Buckeye reached the scoring column and Ohio State’s bench outscored ODU’s 29-9. Kynard finished with eight off the bench as did Ashley Adams. Martina Ellerbe had five and Lisa Blair contributed with two points — the first of her college career — six rebounds and two blocks.
“Lisa does what Lisa does, which is great,” McGuff said. “She has a tremendous presence around the basket defensively. She rebounds and when she gets the ball around the basket she can finish. But right now she is doing exactly what we ask of her, which is terrific. She plays hard, plays with passion and energy, so her minutes are very valueable to us.”
Ohio State is back in action tomorrow vs. Marist at 8:30 p.m. Bowling Green will face Old Dominion at 6 p.m.
