2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the 3-point line in college basketball. In 1986, the NCAA officially adopted the 3-point line forever changing the landscape of college basketball (The NBA first adopted the change in 1979). Current college players have grown up with the 3-point line. Like most changes, the installation of the line was criticized at first, but 25 years later, the phrase ‘beyond the arc’ is common to the game James Naismith created in 1891.
Ohio State has become accustomed to the 3-point field goal over the last quarter of a century. With numerous game-winning shots and stellar individual and team performances from beyond the arc, the Scarlet and Gray have many historical moments directly tied to the 3-point field goal. Since the Big Ten Conference experimented with the rule change in 1983 and with the NCAA’s inception of the rule in 1986, the Buckeyes have had their share of memorable moments ranging from venues such as historic St. John Arena to Value City Arena. They’ve also had many memorable individual moments from the likes of Dennis Hopson, Michael Redd and most recently, Jon Diebler.
