COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind three champions and a runner-up finish, the Ohio State wrestling team had a strong outing in its first action of 2009-10 at the Eastern Michigan Open at Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Freshmen Mike Fee (149) and Peter Capone (174) won their first events as college competitors. Sophomore Johnny Hiles (HWT) also secured a championship to start the season on a high note. Meanwhile, sophomore Tony Jameson was the runner-up at 157 pounds. All four competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
In the Open Division, junior Nikko Triggas was the lone Buckeye to place as he finished sixth at 125 pounds.
Fee, who hails from Mentor, Ohio, recorded two shutouts and a fall en route to the title. Following a pin of Cameron Serba in 6:19, Fee went on to down Craig West of Lindsey Wilson, 9-0. Another blanking ensued when Fee shut out Matt Lyon of Michigan, 4-0. The Buckeye won by three points (7-4) against Tim Rich of Edinboro before locking up the title, 4-1, against the Fighting Scots’ Luke Speno.
A native of Johnson City, N.Y., Capone followed his first-round bye with an 8-4 decision over Phillip Joseph of host school Eastern Michigan. Maintaining his momentum, Capone posted a 10-0 major decision of Indiana’s Bryce Grimes and then bettered that performance with a 15-1 win against Tom Kerrigan of Ashland. In the final, Capone secured the victory with a 7-2 decision against Brockport’s Clay Neivert.
After three-consecutive decisions, Hiles won the final in dominating style, pinning Michael McClure of Michigan State in 1:38. He began his title run with a 5-3 decision over Earnest James of Edinboro before being forced into overtime against another Fighting Scot in Daniel Estricher. Hiles escaped the overtime match with a 2-1 decision. In the semifinals, the Central Ohio native from Westerville, beat Willie Wiggins of Lindenwood, 3-2.
Jameson began the 157-pound bracket with a 3:59-second pin of Cleveland State’s Shayne Stewart. He then met Kyle Mosier of Purdue and handed the Boilermaker an 11-7 loss. Heading into the quarterfinals, Jameson preceded to put 16 points on the board in consecutive matches, first against Edinboro’s John Greishelmer (16-9) and then against Kevin Bialka of Northwestern (16-8) in the semifinals. However, Jameson, who hails from Youngstown, Ohio, suffered a 7-3 setback in the final to Matthew Laird of Edinboro.
In continued action in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, two freshmen in Jacob Vaughan and Zack Tinch finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in their weight classes.
Vaughan, who came to Ohio State from Johnstown, Ohio, competed in the 133-pound bracket and earned an opening round win against Tiffin’s Jordan Duckett, 5-0, before dropping his second match of the day to Corey Duncan of Lindenwood, 5-3. Vaughan then reeled off four-consecutive wins in the consolation bracket but was forced to default his next match because of injury.
Cardington, Ohio, native Tinch lost his third-round match to drop to the consolation bracket, but was able to win two more matches to advance to the fifth-place bout. However, he lost his final contest because of a medical default.
Also competing in the Freshman/Sophomore Division were Garrett Henry (133) and Dominic Jontony (HWT).
Triggas, who hails from Moraga, Calif., suffered a second-round loss before rebounding in consolation action with a pair of wins to finish sixth at 125 pounds.
Additional Buckeyes competing in the Open Division included Bo Touris (125), Pat Zamaria (133), Jared Kusar (149), Max Sall (174), TC Pendleton (174) and Zach Stolarsky (197).
