Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye freshman Mario Ventiquattro completed his first career hat trick with a goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Ohio State men’s lacrosse to a 10-9 victory at Denver Sunday in Denver, Colo.
Ohio State, on a four-game winning streak, improves to 8-4 this year and is undefeated in the Great Western Lacrosse League with a 4-0 mark. The Buckeyes will take on 3-0 (GWLL) Notre Dame at noon Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus to wrap up league play. A win would give the Buckeyes the outright conference title and the GWLL’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The Pioneers drop to 7-7 and 2-2 in the league.
Against the Pioneers, the Buckeyes led throughout the game, including 5-1 at halftime, until there was less than a minute left in regulation. After Ohio State went ahead, 9-6, at 3:50, the Pioneers scored the last three goals of the fourth quarter, including Joey Murray’s tally with 36 seconds left that tied the score at 9-all, to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Ventiquattro (Fr., Carthage, N.Y./Carthage Central) had the first shot on goal, but it was saved by DU goalie Jeb Hollinsgworth. Denver then cleared the ball and Buckeye goalie Stefan Schroder (Jr., Kirkville, N.Y./Onodaga C.C./East Syracuse Minoa) made a save on Ilija Gajic to keep the game tied. The Buckeyes got the ball down-field and Jeff Ryan (So., Syracuse, N.Y./Hobart/West Genesee) found Ventiquattro at the right side of the net for the winner.
Three Buckeyes had a team-best four points in the win. Ventiquattro had a hat trick and assist, Ben Drake (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had a goal and career-best three assists and Ryan had two goals and two assists. James Green (Fr., Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) also had a hat trick, marking the first multiple-goal game of his career. The Buckeyes outscored the Pioneers, 5-1, in the first half, including 3-1 in the first quarter. Ryan got Ohio State on the board at the 11:02 mark, assisted by Brian Lalley (So., Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). The Pioneers tied the game on Jon Paulson’s tally at 8:25. Ryan scored his second goal of the game 37 seconds later to put Ohio State ahead at the 7:48 mark, with Joel Dalgarno (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve (Ohio) picking up the assist. Kyle Widerstedt scored at 13:41, followed by Brandon Barcus’ tally at 12:58 and Murray’s score at 11:21. OSU responded with two goals, as Buchanan set up Green at 6:23 and Drake tallied, assisted by Ventiquattro, at 3:59. OSU led, 7-4, at the end of the third quarter.

Game Notes

Ohio State, which beat Air Force, 10-6 Friday, was 2-0 on its trip to Colorado for the first time since 1999.
The Buckeyes, who now lead the series with Denver 8-4, ended a two-game losing streak to Denver and a two-game losing streak in road games vs. the Pioneers. OSU’s last win over Denver also was in overtime, April 25, 2004, in Columbus (9-8).
The overtime win was the Buckeyes’ first since beating UMBC in two overtimes, 10-9, March 5, 2005. OSU was 0-1 in OT last year, with a loss at Penn State, and had not played an overtime game this season.
Buchanan is on a 27-game point streak that began with two games remaining in the 2005 season (May 1, 2005 vs. Fairfield). He has 46-36-82 totals during the stretch. Ryan has multiple goals in nine games this season, including the last six, and has more than two points in all but one game this season. It was his second four-point outing, one shy of the five points he had in the season opener.
Green has back-to-back three-point games, after posting a goal and two assists at Air Force Friday. He had his first career multiple-goal game and has goals in 7-of-11 games on the year.
Ventiquattro, who has played in the last five games for the Buckeyes, is on a four-game scoring streak and has 7-2-9 totals over the stretch and multiple points in the last three games.
Drake had a career-high three assists and four points. He has 2-6-8 totals over the last three games. He entered the 2007 season with just one career goal.
Dalgarno had an assist to extend his point streak, which began in his first game as a Buckeye, to 25 games (47-37-84). It was the first time he was held to just one point since his first career game Feb. 18, 2006. It ended his goal-scoring streak at 12.
