Junior thrower Keturah Lofton (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville)turned in a spectacular day at the Ohio State Relays last Saturdayas the former sprinter-turned thrower became the first in OSU andBig Ten history to reach 200 feet in the women’s hammer throw.Lofton measured an exact 200-0 to claim runner-up in the eventbehind unattached Jackie Jeschelnig of the Ashland Elite, who set aJesse Owens Stadium venue mark at 225-10. Lofton’s record, whichalso served as a NCAA Mideast regional qualifier, snapped theprevious Ohio State and conference standard held by former BuckeyeKaty Craig, who reached 199-3 in the 2002 season. Later in the day,Lofton posted another runner-up mark in the shot put (45-9.25) anda third-place finish in the discus (158-3). Men’s lacrosse seniorgoalie Tony Russo was named the Great Western Lacrosse League’sPlayer of the Week Monday. Russo led the Buckeyes to wins over tworanked opponents last week, as the squad topped then-No. 13 NotreDame on the road Wednesday and then-No. 8 Duke at home Saturday.Against the Irish, Russo, a Fallston, Md., native and Calvert Hallproduct, made 12 saves and allowed eight goals as the Buckeyes cameback from a three-goal deficit entering the final quarter for a 9-8win. In the game against Duke, Russo made a season-high 16 savesand allowed nine goals. Russo has started all nine games in net forthe Buckeyes and is among the nation’s leaders in goals-againstaverage (6.34) and save percentage (.640). He ranks second all-timein OSU history for career saves with 574 and is 36 saves shy of theall-time mark of 610 set by Jim Hartnett from 1979-81. This marksthe fourth conference player of the week award for Russo, the 2003GWLL Player of the Year, as he was honored once in each of hisfirst three years at Ohio State.

The No. 8-ranked men’s lacrosse team posted two impressive winslast week. At then-No. 13 Notre Dame Wednesday, the squad came backfrom a 7-4 deficit entering the fourth quarter to post a 9-8 win,capped off by Ben Wolff’s gamewinning goal with 12 secondsremaining. Against then-No. 8 Duke at home Saturday, junior KyleOlson scored three goals and added three assists to lead the squadto a 16-9 win. The team plays host to GWLL-foe Butler at 7 p.m.Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The No. 1 rowing teamdefeated No. 4 Michigan last Saturday at Griggs Reservoir. Thesquad was led by the first varsity eight, which captured Big TenBoat of the Week honors for the second week in a row. The firstvarsity eight topped the Wolverines by 7.14 seconds to improve to3-0 on the season. Members of the winning boat were Susi Wesenberg(Sr., Rostock, Germany), Ellen Maas (Fr., Amsterdam, theNetherlands), Amanda Purcell (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio), NinettKossowsky (So., Leipzig, Germany), Wilma Dressel (Fr., Dortmund,Germany), Anna Fago (Fr., Giessen, Germany), Diana Albrecht (Jr.,Dresden, Germany), Tatiana Grigorieva (Sr., Moscow, Russia) andcoxswain Ashley Orr (Sr., Dublin, Ohio). This weekend, the Buckeyestravel to Charlottesville, Va., for the ACC/Big Ten Double DualsSaturday, where OSU will face No. 18 Duke and No. 8 Virginia. Lastweekend in Bloomington, Ind., the women’s tennis team took threematches in singles, but the Hoosiers swept doubles competition,which would prove to be the deciding margin. Ohio State gotvictories from Erica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) over LindaTran, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 2, Emily DeCamilla (Jr., Sacramento,Calif./Maryland), who swept Laura McGaffigan, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4and Lindsey Adams (Sr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), whoneeded three sets to defeat Karie Schlukebir, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-4, atthe No. 5 position. This week the Buckeyes return home for a pairof matches. Ohio State faces Purdue at 11 a.m. Saturday andIllinois at 11 a.m. Sunday. Both matches will be held at theStickney Tennis Center. The baseball team took three of four gamesfrom Illinois this past weekend to open Big Ten play. Ohio Stategave Bob Todd his 300th league win Friday with a 5-1 score beforejumping on the Illini by a 14-3 score in the first game of adoubleheader Saturday. Ronnie Bourquin gave the Buckeyes a 5-3victory in the nightcap with a two-run walk-off home run to set upa chance for a sweep Sunday. Instead, Illinois scored nine runs inthe second inning and cruised to a 12-4 victory. Bourquin finishedthe weekend 9-for-14 (.643), including a 3-for-3 effort with threeRBI in the second game of the series. He finished the weekend withfive RBI and shared Big Ten Player of the Week honors. DrewAnderson added seven hits and Jacob Howell added six as theBuckeyes batted .338 in the three games to up their team average to.273, the highest figure of the season. Josh Newman was incrediblein his start Friday night. He pitched the 15th complete game of hiscareer, allowing only one run on seven hits with a career-high 14strikeouts to pick up his 28th career victory. He is now tied forfourth all-time in wins, fourth in innings pitched (310.1) andeighth in strikeouts (241). The Buckeyes travel to West Lafayette,Ind. this weekend for a four-game conference series at Purdue. Theteams will play a single game at 4 p.m. Friday, a doubleheader at 2p.m. Saturday and a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday. The next homegame will be next Wednesday, April 14, against Dayton. Game time isat 6:35 p.m. The softball team (19-12, 2-2 Big Ten) hosts a pair ofmidweek non-conference double-headers as the Buckeyes take onButler Tuesday and Dayton Wednesday. Both twin bills begin at 5p.m. at Buckeye Field. Ohio State gets back into Big Ten play thisweekend at Big Ten leader and ninth-ranked Michigan. Karisa Evansis batting .348 with a team-high 31 hits, while other offensiveleaders include Ashley Cutcliff (.409, 2 HR), Chelsea Baker (.379,8-game hitting streak), Nycole Koyano (.361, 10 SB) and MeganSchwab (.313, 3 HR). Kristi DeVries (7-6, 1.26 ERA) leads thepitching staff in strikeouts with 95 and pitched her 23rd-careershutout last Sunday in Ohio State’s 2-0 win vs. Wisconsin. JameeJuarez (9-5, 2.12 ERA) has 78 strikeouts and is also leading theteam offensively in RBI with 21. The third-ranked women’s golf teamfinished in seventh place with a mark of 906 (+42) Sunday at theBryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. The Buckeyes shota final round score of 302 and jumped from 11th to seventh on thefinal day. Ohio State senior Allison Hanna tied for fifth placeindividually to lead the Buckeyes with a mark of 218, including a72 in the final round. Junior Kristen White tied for 16th placewith a score of 221 while junior Lindsay Knowlton tied for 30thwith a mark of 228. Ohio State will play host to the 2004 Big TenChampionships April 23-25 on the University Scarlet Course inColumbus, Ohio. The track and field team opened the outdoor homeschedule with a solid team showing in the 2004 Ohio State Relays.Junior thrower Keturah Lofton helped the Buckeyes with a Big Tenrecord-setting mark in the women’s hammer (200 feet), while fellowthrowers Dan Taylor and Amaraichi Ukabam joined Lofton with Top 3finishes in three events Saturday. On the track, the men’s distanceteam took the Top 4 places in the men’s 3,000-meter run.
Junior Dan Glaz led the Buckeyes in the 3,000m with a winning time of 8:36.20. Other Buckeyes claiming top marks in their respective events were senior hurdler Molly Logan, who notched a wind-aided 13.55 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, while junior John Morris also added a first-place score in the men’s 400-meters at 49.02. Rounding out the track showing was the women’s 4×100-meter relay team that took first place in a time of 46.80.
The field events featured a winning mark by pole vaulter Seth MacCarter (15-5) and runner-up places by fellow pole vaulter Becki Heintz on the women’s side with a height of 11-3.75 and senior Nosa Ehimwenman (23-6) in the long jump.
Taylor, Ukabam and Lofton combined to dominate the standings in the throw events as Taylor posted a winner in the shot put and two runner-ups in the hammer (220-5) and discus (176-2), while Ukabam (10-10.75) claimed the women’s shot put, besting Lofton (45-9.25). The two women’s throwers each placed within the Top 3 in each throw event Saturday.
This week, Ohio State travels west to compete in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Berkeley, Calif.
The No. 5 men’s gymnastics team concluded its season with afourth place finish at the 2004 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championshipswith a season-high score of 221.350. Finishing as the Top 6 U.S.born gymnasts in the all-around or individual events finals, threeBuckeyes earned All-America honors. Ronald Ferris (So., Austintown,Ohio), the Big Ten high bar champion, finished fifth on the event,posting a 9.537 to earn his first career accolade. Co-captain RandyMonahan (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) garnered his fourth careerAll-America honor by placing third in the all-around (55.725) andeighth on high bar with a score of 9.312. Kerry Adderly’s (Jr.,Orlando, Fla.) 8.937 on parallel bars (seventh) earned him histhird career laurel. Women’s lacrosse, 4-6 overall and 1-2 in theAmerican Lacrosse Conference last week lost a 10-6 decision atVirginia Tech and then defeated Davidson, 17-10 at home. OSU’sAshley Evans had a team-high two goals at Virginia Tech. AgainstDavidson, Regina Oliver scored four goals and added two assistswhile KC Carter had three goals and Amy Tulk two. The Buckeyes willface third-ranked Notre Dame (8-0) Saturday at 1 p.m. in JesseOwens Memorial Stadium. Men’s volleyball improved to 16-8 overalland 9-3 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Associationwith 3-0 road wins over Mercyhurst (30-24, 30-26, 30-28) andFindlay (30-20, 30-26, 30-25) last weekend. Adam Pedersen and MikeWauligman had 10 kills each for OSU at Mercyhurst with Pedersenhitting .615 (10-2-13). Mark Greaves had a match-high 18 kills atFindlay with Wauligman adding 10. The Buckeyes face the NCAAdefending national champions Lewis (10-3) Friday and conferenceleading IPFW (11-3) Saturday in home matches. In the MIVA, the topfour team all have three losses with Ohio State facing all three inthe next two weeks at home. Two wins this week and victories overBall State (10-3) and Quincy (3-10) next week would make theBuckeyes the regular season MIVA Champion. Buckeye gymnastsTiffanie Janke and Elizabeth Meaney concluded their 2004 season,Saturday, with a strong showing at the NCAA Central RegionChampionships. Meaney competed as an all-arounder, while Jankefinished a stellar career competing on both vault and beam. Neithergymnast qualified for the NCAA National Championships. Meaney (Jr.,Ashtabula, Ohio) placed eighth in the all-around with a score of39.225. Her best finish came on floor, posting a 9.850 to placefifth. Meaney also finished 17th on vault, with a 9.800 and 20th onboth beam (9.825) and bars (9.750). Janke (Sr., Schaumberg, Ill.)finished the evening with an 11th place, 9.850 on vault and a 13thplace 9.850 on beam. The men’s golf team returns to action Fridayto compete in the 2004 Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W. Va.Freshman Colin Biles enters the tournament after a strong outing atthe Schenkel Invitational where he posted a three-round total of214 to tie for fifth, while competing among some of the topcollegiate players in the country. The No. 16 men’s tennis teamdefeated conference foe No. 73 Indiana, 6-1, April 3 in Columbus,Ohio. With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 14-2 overall and 4-0in Big Ten play. Ohio State remains undefeated at home with 10victories in dual match competition. The squad is on a 13-matchhome win streak that dates back to the 2003 season when Ohio Statehanded Purdue a 5-2 decision April 6. Next up, the Buckeyes travelto face Purdue at noon Saturday, April 10 in West Lafayette, Ind.Ohio State then faces defending national champion and No. 1-rankedIllinois Sunday, April 11 in Champaign, Ill. Men’s hockey seniordefenseman Doug Andress was named to the national All-USCHO SecondTeam, US College Hockey Online announced Monday. Andress the 2004CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman earned CCHA all-tournament teamhonors after posting a team best nine points in the postseason.Andress ended his career seventh all-time in scoring among OSUdefensemen with 89 points. This season Andress had a team best 27assists and a career high 32 points. He was second on the team witha +16 rating.
