Women’s Basketball Beats Wayne State, 100-57, in Home Opener – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s basketball team (2-0, 0-0) won their home opener against Wayne State (0-3, 0-0), 100-57, in front of 1,754 people at Value City Arena tonight. Senior Courtney Coleman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hughes) scored a career-high 29 points (13-for-16), grabbed eight boards, earned three steals and handed out two assists against the Warriors. Junior LaToya Turner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) recorded a double-double (the fourth of her career) with 23 points and 11 boards in 25 minutes of play.
The Buckeyes opened the game with a 6-0 run, but trailed in the first half by as many as seven points. OSU inched back to tie the game at 30 with 6:04 to go in the half. Ohio State went on a 17-point scoring run to close the first stanza of play with a 47-30 advantage. The team added 4 unanswered points to begin the second half to bring their scoring run to 21-0 for the second game in a row. Also for the second consecutive game, Ohio State was perfect from the free-throw line in the first half (8-8). The team finished 19-21 (.905) for the night from the charity stripe.
“I think we needed to begin the game with a little more intensity,” OSU head coach Jim Foster said. “I think we came out tonight a little tentative. We probably weren’t as aggressive as we should have been. I think we are a team that is capable of runs, as we showed tonight.”
The Buckeyes dominated the second half by outscoring their opponents 53-27 the final 20 minutes of the game. Foster’s team was .557 from the field (.429 from behind the arc) and earned 66 points in the paint compared to Wayne State’s 12.
Sophomores Caity Matter (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) and Ashley Allen (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) contributed 12 (4-for-7) and 11 (4-for-8) points, respectively. Allen upped her career-best assists mark to 10 after breaking it last game against Duquesne (8). Senior D’wan Shackleford (Newark, Ohio/Newark) was solid for the Buckeyes by adding eight boards (six offensive) and eight points. Junior Emily Haynam (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) scored seven points in four minutes of action.
Wayne State’s Keneisha Moss was the high scorer and rebounder for the Warriors with 22 points and six boards. Jessica King and Jodi Young each added 10 points to Wayne State’s effort.
The Buckeyes participate in the 16th Annual Coors Classic Nov. 29-30 in Boulder, Colo. They will take on Villanova at 8 p.m. EST Friday and will play either Hartford or Colorado Saturday. The championship game begins at 10 p.m. EST and the consolation game takes place at 8 p.m. EST.
