COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eighty total victories were accumulated by the 27-man Buckeye contingent competing in the 2019 Michigan State Open on Saturday, Nov. 2. Over 55% of those Ohio State representatives reached the podium and placed inside the top-6 of their weight class. Let’s take a closer look at the lofty totals compiled by the Scarlet and Gray.

Five of the 10 Open Division champions were Buckeyes. The University of Pittsburgh boasted two champs while Big Ten brethren Indiana, Michigan and Purdue combined for the other three individual titles.

A regulation collegiate wrestling match spans seven minutes. Redshirt freshman Sammy Sasso was anything but regular in East Lansing, however. No man took the mat and lasted the distance against the Buckeye as Sasso disposed of five straight foes before the final whistle with three pins and tech falls.

Ohio State registered eight wins over top-25 opponents, including Luke Pletcher’s finals victory over top-ranked Dom Demas of Oklahoma. This came after Pletcher sent No. 12 Dylan Duncan (Illinois) into the consolation bracket with a 15-5 semifinals defeat. Quinn Kinner was a multiple-time winner against nationally-ranked foes as well, triumphing over No. 25 Carmen Ferrante (Penn) and No. 17 Mario Guillen (Ohio).
9 & 11
Nine of the 10 Open Division quarterfinals had at least one Buckeye. Of the 11 total OSU quarterfinalists in the Open Division, seven advanced to the semifinals and five went on to earn individual titles.

Fifteen (of 27) Buckeyes placed inside the top-6 of their weight class.
39 & 80
Nearly half of Ohio State’s wins came with bonus points. The Buckeyes racked up a whopping 17 pins, 11 major decisions and seven tech falls (add four medical forfeits for a sum of 39 bonus-point wins). Ohio State posted an overall record of 80-42 (.656) in the Open and Freshman/Sophomore Divisions combined.
