Football and basketball photographer Chance Brockway was a friend of the Ohio State athletics department for 50 years. “You could call him and say you really needed a photograph and Chance would bring it to you…even if it was 2 a.m.,” Steve Snapp, longtime OSU sports information director and associate athletics director for broadcasting, said. “And he probably didn’t even charge us.” Chance photographed Ohio State events from the mid-1950s and he was still shooting after the turn of the century. His son, Sonny, remembers Chance’s last football game on the sidelines as the 2005 Penn State game. He was 86 at the time. Chance Brockway was 88-years-old when he died June 9, 2007. He will be missed. His memory will live on though, thanks to a library of terrific photos that many of us have seen but maybe didn’t know who took the photo. Chances are, if it’s a great shot of Woody or Archie or Rex, it was probably taken by Chance Brockway.
