COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State coaching staff selected a total of 20 players – 11 on defense, seven on offense and two on special teams – as their champions following Saturday night’s 34-10 win over No. 25 Michigan State inside Ohio Stadium. Jashon Cornell and Shaun Wade shared Player of the Game honors on defense while J.K. Dobbins and Thayer Munford did the same on offense. Punter Drue Chrisman and WR Chris Olave were the Special Teams Players of the Game.
From the defensive line, six players graded out as champions: Cornell, Chase Young, Davon Hamilton, Robert “BB” Landers, Tyreke Smith and Zach Harrison. That unit was instrumental in limiting Michigan State to just 285 yards of total offense and 2.4 yards per carry. Ohio State now ranks third nationally in total defense (234.0 yards/game), ninth in rushing defense (82.0 yards/game) and No. 3 in scoring defense (8.8 points/game).
Cornell had four tackles, one sack and one tackle-for-loss while Wade finished with five tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one sack and one pass breakup. The Buckeyes have limited their opponents to 300 yards or less of total offense in each of the first six games of the season, the first time that’s happened since 1977.
Dobbins is Ohio State’s Offensive Player of the Game for the third time this season. He ran for 172 yards on 24 carries and had a career-long 67 yard touchdown run in the second quarter to increase the Buckeyes’ lead to 24-10. In the process, Dobbins moved up to No. 7 on Ohio State’s all-time rushing list, passing Keith Byars, Carlos Hyde and J.T. Barrett. He currently ranks second nationally in total rushing yards (826) and third in yards per game (137.6).
Munford paved the way for Dobbins and the rest of the offense to put up 529 yards of total offense and 323 on the ground – the second most that a Mark Dantonio-coached Michigan State team have given up in the last 13 years.
Chrisman punted four times and averaged 48.2 yards per kick. With the help of Olave, the punt unit did not allow any return yards. Through six games, the Buckeyes are No. 9 nationally in net punting and have given up just four return yards on the season.
