COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics and its men’s basketball program mourn the loss of Granville Waiters, who lettered at the center position from 1980-83. He died at the age of 60 Monday.
“The Ohio State men’s basketball family extends its thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and teammates of Granville Waiters,” Chris Holtmann, head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “We were all saddened to learn of his passing. I’ve been so impressed by the reverence and love his former teammates have expressed this week. It’s clear Granville meant so much to so many. He will surely be missed.”
Waiters attended East High School in Columbus before becoming a Buckeye. He later played in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls. He also spent a few years playing in the Spanish League in Spain following his NBA career.
At Ohio State, Waiters led the Buckeyes in 1983 from the field shooting 53.3% (131-246). He is currently ranked No. 7 in career blocked shots with 136. His eight blocks vs. West Virginia (12/15/82), ranks sixth most (t) in a game all time.
The 1983 Ohio State captain scored 601 career points with 434 career rebounds in 104 games played (61 starts). His teams won 76 games and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.
