PITTSBURGH – In Ohio State’s final preseason fencing meet, senior Yelena Kalkina (Almaty, Kazakhstan) led the way again, recording a fourth-place finish in the women’s foil at the NAC Open.
More than 1,000 fencers participated in the annual event that ends Monday with a junior competition for fencers under-20 years old. “This was by far the toughest meet with the most competitors in which we have ever participated,” said head coach Charlotte Remenyik.
Fane Groes (Copenhagen, Denmark) finished 18th in the women’s foil and local standout Joe Wernet (Bexley, Ohio) was the men’s top competitor, placing 77th in the sabre.
“This is the second meet that Joe has led the men,” said Remenyik. “His finish was very good for him, especially considering the competition.”
The Buckeyes open the 1999 season Jan. 22-24 at the Northwestern Dual Meets.
