COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State Director of Athletics Andy Geiger met earlier today with head women’s basketball coach Beth Burns and informed her that she would not receive a new contract.
Burns is in the final year of a five-year contract at Ohio State. Her current contract expires June 30.
“I felt it was in the best interest of the program to make a change at this time,” said Geiger. “I think we need to move forward under different leadership.”
Burns came to Ohio State from San Diego State. Her record with the Buckeyes is 82-65, including a 14-15 mark this year. Her Big Ten mark with the Buckeyes is 35-45.
“We will begin a new search for a new head coach of women’s basketball as soon as we can, there is no set time frame. Obviously, the NCAA tournament is coming up and we will be visiting with coaches throughout that time, said Geiger”
“It will be an open search, members of the team will be involved. I met with the team an hour ago and informed them of our decision. We will be meeting with the rest of the staff tomorrow morning to talk with them about their futures and whatever I can do to help them.”
“I felt strongly that the program is ready for new leadership. After five years the program is not where we would like it to be, so we are eager to move forward with new leadership.”
