Athletes of the Week
Men’s lacrosse junior midfielder Darius Bowling earned ECAC Specialist of the Week honors after winning a career-high eight faceoffs, picking up six groundballs and causing two turnovers in the win over the Nittany Lions. A native of Atlanta, Bowling won 5 of 8 faceoffs in the second half and overtime as Ohio State rallied. Bowing was 4-2 in the third quarter, as the Buckeyes outscored the Nittany Lions, 6-0, to tie the game at 8-all and he then won 1-of-2 faceoffs in the fourth quarter and the draw to open overtime. Bowling is first on the squad with 18 groundballs and his seven caused turnovers are tied for the team lead. He has at least three groundballs in each game this year. He is fourth among ECAC players with 4.5 groundballs per outing and tied for second in the league with 1.75 caused turnovers per game.
Women’s hockey senior captain Hokey Langan had a goal and an assist in Friday’s win andanother goal on Saturday for a three point weekend in a first roundWCHA Playoff series sweep on the road against Minnesota Duluth.Ohio State is going to its first WCHA Final Face-Off since 2010.Langan has tallied 29 points this season on 12 goals and 17assists. The Chatham, Ontario, native is fifth on the Ohio Stateall-time scoring list with 134 career points.
Baseball (6-4)

Ohio State had its five-game win streak snapped by Connecticut,5-2, Friday afternoon at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
Garrett Russini’s walk-off double to plate Tyler Bocock in thebottom of the 12th inning gave Stetson a 3-2 victory over the OhioState baseball team Saturday evening at Melching Field.
Brad Goldberg was not as dominant as his previous two outingsbut still pitched well, going 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (oneearned) on five hits while striking out five. Ryan Cypret, Joe Ciamacco and Mike Carroll each had two-hit games for the Buckeyes.
Behind strong pitching from senior left-hander Brian King and timely hitting, the Ohio State baseball teamdefeated Central Michigan, 8-1, Sunday morning at Melching Field inDeland.
Trace Dempsey pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, strikingout a batter, as the Buckeyes came away with the victory.
Tim Wetzel and Aaron Gretz each had a pair of hits for the Buckeyes. Kingpicked up the win to move to 2-1 on the season while Dodridgesuffered the loss to fall to 1-2.
Ohio State travels to South Carolina for four games in Myrtle Beachand another at Charleston Southern March 8-12.
No. 16 Men’s Basketball (21-7, 11-5 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Northwestern, 63-53, at Welsh-Ryan Arena inEvanston, Ill.
Lenzelle Smith Jr. led all scorers with a season-high 24 pointsand shot 6 of 11 from 3-point range, career highs in both makes andattempts. He also tied a career best with three steals.
With 19 points, Deshaun Thomas moved to No. 21 on the all-time scoring list atOhio State (1,452 total points). He needs seven points to passDavid Lighty for 20th. Thomas has scored in double figures inall 28 games this season.
The Buckeyes return to action at Indiana at 9 p.m. March 5.
Women’s Basketball (17-12, 7-9 Big Ten)

Senior Tayler Hill scored 18 of her team-high 21 points in the secondhalf and Ashley Adams added a season-high 17 points and 10 rebounds asOhio State picked up a big road win Thursday, 64-53, over theIllini.
For the seventh straight game, Ohio State’s defense held theopponent to 60 points or less while holding the Illini to 29percent from the field. Adams added four blocked shots and heldKarisma Penn to 7 of 20 from the field.
Darryce Moore had 12 points off the bench and Ameryst Alston had eight points for the Buckeyes, who made 19of 24 from the free throw line.
Ohio State defeated Michigan, 66-55, Sunday afternoon at Value CityArena in front of a season-high 7,793 fans.
Hill scored a game-high 20 points and recorded three assists, threesteals and zero turnovers in her final home game as aBuckeye.
Raven Ferguson added 13 points and Alston and Adams each had 12for the Buckeyes, who are now 11-0 on Senior Day under head coachJim Foster.
Senior Amber Stokes finished with six points, four assists and a stealwhile battling foul trouble in the second half.
The Buckeyes will now face Minnesota March 8 at 7 p.m. in the firstround of the Big Ten Tournament in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Buckeyes return to the links at the SeminoleIntercollegiate March 15-17. The three-day tournament will beplayed at the Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
Women’s Golf

Ohio State concluded the final round of the 2013 Allstate SugarBowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship Tuesday in 13th place. The18-team tournament was held at the par 72, 6,105-yard English TurnGolf & Country Club course in New Orleans and featured 15 Top50 teams.
Senior Amy Meier finished tied for 13th to lead the Buckeyes, cardinga 2-over 146 through two rounds of play. She compiled a 4-over 76in the second round.
Sophomore Jan Chanpalangsri posted four birdies in her effort to end thetournament with a 10-over 154. The Bangkok, Thailand, nativenotched a second round score of 2-under 70 to move up from 89th to60th place in the final standings.
Allison Harper tallied a 7-over 79 in the second round to scorean 11-over 155 and tie for 66th place. Claudia Lim totaled a 13-over 157 to tie for 74th, whileSusana Benavides ended the tournament tied for 88th place witha 17-over 161 after two rounds of play.
No. 5 Men’s Gymnastics (5-5-1, 4-4-1 Big Ten)

No. 19 Women’s Gymnastics (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten)

Ohio State topped Illinois State, 195.950-192.775, Sundayafternoon at Horton Field House.
The Buckeyes started the meet on uneven bars, winning the event48.800-47.675, Aly Marohn tied for the event title with a 9.825 while Rachel Abrams and Melanie Shaffer tied for third with a 9.800.
Ohio State then moved to vault, taking the event 49.100-48.200.Shaffer and Sarah Miller tied for first with a 9.850 while Marohn andSarah Grady were knotted in third place at 9.825.
In the third rotation, the Buckeyes posted a 48.950 to top IllinoisState’s 48.800. Miller finished second on the event while Marohnand Alex DeLuca tied for third at 9.800.
Ohio State finished the meet with a season best on balance beam,defeating the Redbirds 49.100-48.100. Miller and Marohn tied forthe event title, each posting a 9.900.
Marohn won the all-around title with a career-best 39.350 whileShaffer finished second at 39.100.
The Buckeyes host Bridgeport at 4 p.m. March 9 on Senior Day inColumbus.
Men’s Hockey (14-15-7, 13-10-5 CCHA)

Behind 29 saves from senior Brady Hjelle, the Ohio State men’s hockey team shut out No.3-ranked Miami, 3-0, Friday in Steve Cady Arena in Oxford,Ohio.
The line of junior Alex Szczechura and sophomores Tanner Fritz and Max McCormick paced the team with six points, as Szczechura andMcCormick each had a goal and an assist and Fritz had twoassists.
Hjelle’s shutout was his fourth of the season, tying for first inthe CCHA and second in the NCAA.
Hjelle was named the Perani Cup first star of the game for the 10thtime this season and has been a first or second star a league-high14 times (in 23 league starts). He clinched the league’s overallPerani Cup trophy.
The shutout was the Buckeyes’ first against Miami since Jan. 7,2011 in Columbus (1-0). The win ended a five-game (0-4-1) winlessstreak for Ohio State vs. Miami.
In its final regular-season game in the CCHA, the Ohio State men’shockey team lost to No. 3-ranked and league champion Miami, 4-2,Saturday in Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
Fritz, Buckeye sophomore forward, won the CCHA scoring title,finishing the 28-game schedule with a league-best 32 points. He isthe third Buckeye to win the crown, following Hugo Boisvert in 1998and Paul Pooley in 1984. Fritz also led all CCHA players with 23assists in conference action, the fourth Buckeye to pace the leaguein helpers (PeterBoyd ’10, Boisvert ’98, Paul Pooley ’84).
Alex Szczechura is fourth on the team with 22 points and tiedfor second with 12 goals.
Ryan Dzingel leads the Buckeyes with 14 goals and is secondwith 33 points. He finished CCHA play third in scoring with 28points in league games only, tying for second with 18assists.
The fourth-place finish for the Buckeyes is the highest since the2004-05 squad finished second.
The Buckeyes will host Ferris State in the quarterfinal round ofthe CCHA playoffs March 15-17 in a best of three series in the OSUIce Rink after a first-round bye.
Women’s Hockey (19-14-3, 14-13-3 WCHA)

Ohio State outlasted Minnesota Duluth Friday afternoon in gameone of their first round WCHA Playoffs series; winning 4-2 atAMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
Special teams played a crucial role as the Buckeyes converted onthree of four power play opportunities while killing off all threeof the Bulldogs power play chances. Redshirt junior goaltenderChelsea Knapp stopped 21 of 23 shots faced to backstop OhioState.
Following an interference call on the Bulldogs, junior forwardAlly Tarr put one by rookie goaltender Karissa Grapp. Tarr wasset up nicely on the play from sophomore forward Taylor Kuehl. Sophomore Sara Schmitt was also credited with an assist on thescore.
Senior forward Paige Semenza netted the Buckeyes second power play goal at the18:20 mark of the first following another interference call on UMD.The 13th goal of the season for Semenza was assisted on by juniorAnnie Svedin and Schmitt; their 13th and 21st helpers of theseason, respectively.
Svedin fired one past Grapp from the top of the zone, putting OSUup 3-2. The goal was the fourth for Svedin this season. SeniorsHokey Langan and Tina Hollowell tallied assists on the game-winning goal fromSvedin.
Langan extended the lead to 4-2 with an empty-net score at 18:15 ofthe third, with senior Minttu Tuominen and Semenza recording assists.
Ohio State skated to a 3-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth Saturdayat AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. With the win the Buckeyes earn thefirst round WCHA Playoff series sweep and advance to next weekend’sWCHA Final Face-Off.
Ohio State was paced offensively be three seniors in Hollowell,Tuominen and Langan and redshirt junior goaltender Knapp earned theshut out, the third for her this season. Knapp finished the gamewith 21 saves for OSU, who outshot UMD 34-21.
Ohio State will next play Minnesota Friday at 7 p.m. in asemi-final game at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
No. 8/11 Men’s Lacrosse (4-0)

Ohio State rallied from a six-goal halftime deficit to defeatNo. 8 Penn State in overtime, 10-9, Saturday afternoon at PennState Lacrosse Stadium in University Park, Pa.
Buckeye sophomore Jesse King led the Buckeyes with three goals and five pointsand netted the gamewinner with just :00.2 seconds left in the firstovertime period.
Sophomore Turner Evans had a hat trick and assist for four points, whilesenior Logan Schuss had three points on two goals and an assist.Sophomore David Planning and freshman Carter Brown each had a goal and an assist for two points.Junior Greg Dutton made eight saves in the Buckeye cage. JuniorDarius Bowling won eight faceoffs for Ohio State and had ateam-best six groundballs, along with two caused turnovers. JuniorJoe Meurer had a team-high three caused turnovers, as OhioState had nine caused turnovers as a team.
King is second on the team with 11 goals and has a hat trick inthree of the Buckeyes’ four games this season. He has 11 points,with six goals and five assists, in his last two games combined(marking the first multiple-assist games of his career). He is tiedfor second on the squad with 16 points this year and is on a10-game point streak (19g, 11a, 30p).
Schuss is first on the team with 12 goals and 18 points. Heextended his point streak to 49 games (each game of his collegiatecareer) and has multiple points in each of his last 25 outings. Heis third in program history with 183 points and 114 goals andeighth with 69 assists.
Evans had the first hat trick and four-point game of his Buckeyecareer after three two-goal games and two three-pointoutings.
Ohio State, in a stretch of four-consecutive games vs. Top 10teams, returns to Columbus to host No. 7 Denver at 1 p.m. Saturdayin Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to begin ECAC play for bothsquads.
No. 13 Women’s Lacrosse (2-2)

Despite three goals from freshman Cian Dabrowski for the second-consecutive game, the 13th-rankedOhio State women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 9 Notre Dame, 13-8,Wednesday evening at the Loftus Center in South Bend, Ind.
In addition to Dabrowski’s tallies, Mary Kate Facchina supported the Buckeye effort with a pair ofgoals and Katie Chase, Jessica Hassett and Cara Facchina each added one.
Chase scored a game-high four goals and Tori DeScenza made a season-high 13 saves, but the 13th-rankedOhio State was edged by Stanford, 12-10, on a snowy Saturdayafternoon at the Harmon Family Football Complex.
Mary Kate Facchina opened scoring about 1.5 minutes into thesecond half, giving Cian Dabrowski her first career assist, and helping theBuckeyes pull within two with 19:15 to play. Chase and Jessica Hassett also scored as Ohio State made it 10-8 and theclosest margin since the opening minutes of the contest.
Ohio State has a week off before returning to action at noon, March10, against Canisius at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Griffsare 0-2 on the season with losses to Louisville and Cornell andhave two games scheduled before meeting the Buckeyes inColumbus.
Pistol

Ohio State hosted the Midwest NRA National Open Air PistolSectionals March 1-2 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range. Competitorsfrom Indiana University, the University of Akron and the communityparticipated in the event along with Ohio State.
Senior Jason Reineck placed first overall with a score of 562. He wasfollowed by junior Joe Totts, who earned a 553 for second place. Community shooterMike Creamer placed third with a 550.
The next four spots were all taken by the Buckeyes, as seniorGary Reburn placed fourth (548), sophomore Greyson McCaig placed fifth (546), junior A.J. Tourigny placed sixth (546) and junior Kimberly Hullings placed seventh (543).
The Buckeyes return to action at the National Collegiate PistolChampionships in Ft. Benning, Ga., March 12-14.
Rifle

AmandaLuoma will represent the Buckeyes as an individual competitorat the NCAA Rifle Championships held at Ohio State March 8-9. Luomawill be part of the field of 48 competitors vying for both the airand smallbore rifle NCAA Individual National Championships.

Men’s Swimming

Ohio State finished third with 470 points at the 2013 Big TenChampionships Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind. The third-placeperformance marked the fifth-consecutive year the Buckeyes havefinished in the Top 3 at the conference championships.
Overall, Ohio State notched one NCAA “A’ time and 14 NCAA “B” timesin the last session of finals at the championships.
Shane Miszkiel was named a first team All-Big Ten selection,while Zach Birnbrich, Zach Holmes, Connor McDonald, Tim Phillips, Jason Schnur, Keanu Stevenson and Garrett Trebilcock were second team honorees. Miszkiel also wasnamed Co-Diver of the Championships along with Darian Schmidt ofIndiana.
The Buckeyes will now prepare for their Last Chance Meet to improvetheir times in order to help qualify for NCAAs. The meet isscheduled for Noon March 10 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Synchronized Swimming

Ohio State captured its 23rd-consecutive North RegionalChampionship Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyescollected 96 points to edge Lindenwood, who finished second with 91points.
Yuliya Maryanko clinched the A Technical competition with ascore of 85.981, and Julia Gaylard posted a score of 70.634 to capture the BTechnical competition.
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., March 20-23to compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championships.
No. 4 Men’s Tennis (14-2, 1-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State improved to 13-2 on the season after winning 4-1 atNo. 37 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., Wednesday.
Ohio State won the doubles point for the 14th time this season. The12th-ranked tandem of Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen were the first to claim victory with an 8-2defeat of North Carolina’s Nelson Vick and Maik Ulrich on court two. At third doubles itwas an 8-3 victory by Blaz Rola and Kevin Metka over Andrew Gores and Oystein Steiro that earnedthe Buckeyes the doubles point.
No. 2 Peter Kobelt increased the Buckeye lead to 2-0 by winning 6-3,6-2 over Brett Clark at No. 2 singles. The next Ohio State victorycame when McCarthy defeated William Parker 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Ohio State beat Penn State, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the IndoorTennis Center in University Park, Pa.
No. 17 Blaz Rola clinched the victory for the Scarlet and Gray at No.2 singles. Rola needed three sets to defeat Tomas Hanzlik, 6-1,4-6, 6-2. Rola, a junior, improves to 10-0 on the season and 3-0 oncourt No. 2.
The two other victories needed to reach four points came from winsat Nos. 4 and 3 singles. Ille Van Engelen surrendered just two points en route to a 6-1,6-1 victory over Roman Trkulja on court four. In third singlesDevin McCarthy was a 7-5, 6-4 winner vs. Russell Bader.
The Buckeyes will play their third-consecutive road match as theyhead to Malibu, Calif., to take on No. 12 Pepperdine at 4 p.m.March 12.
Women’s Tennis (5-4, 0-1)

Ohio State bested No.35-ranked Penn State, 5-2, at the VarsityIndoor Center Sunday afternoon.
The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions split the first two doublesmatchups, but a comeback victory on court three secured the doublespoint for Ohio State. Fidan Manashirova and Kelsey Dieters notched the first win for the Buckeyes duringdoubles play with an 8-2 victory over Penn State’s Jacqueline Zuhseand Katherine Whiteaway.
The Buckeye duo of Gabby Steele and Grainne O’Neill rallied back from a 1-5 deficit to claim thedoubles point for Ohio State over Carmen Sandor and DevanMcCluskey.
Steele finished first in singles play for the Buckeyes with adominating win over McCluskey, 6-1, 6-2 and Kara Cecil added another point for Ohio State with a victory instraight sets, 6-3, 7-5, on court two to give the Buckeyes a 3-1advantage over the Nittany Lions.
Ohio State shut out Youngstown State, 7-0, Sunday evening for itssecond win of the day.
Steele now leads the team with 17 singles wins and eight dual-matchvictories, followed by Manashirova and Dieters, who both have sevendual-match wins, with 16 and 14, respectively. The doubles tandemof Cecil and Dieters leads the team with 10 victories as a duo,while Dieters has a team-best 14 doubles wins, followed by Steelewith 13. The team will be back in action at the Blue-GrayTournament in Montgomery, Ala., March 15-17. The Buckeyes will bejoined by Pepperdine, Virginia, Boise State, Marshall, MichiganState, SMU and Yale in the event.
Men’s Track & Field

Ohio State completed its last chance weekend at the Alex WilsonInvitational in Notre Dame, Ind., Saturday evening.
The two-day event was highlighted by a second-place and season-bestlong jump of 7.65m (25-1.25) from Korbin Smith, a distance that ranks the senior 17th in DivisionI this season.
Big Ten 200m champion Timothy Faust followed up his conference title run with asecond-place time of 21.21 in his signature event.
Chris Fallon and the 4x400m relay team also represented OhioState at Notre Dame. Fallon concluded his stellar indoor campaignwith a 20th-place time of 4:06.38 in the mile, while the 1600mrelay placed eighth in a time of 3:08.31. Fallon (mile) and juniorDemoye Bogle (60m hurdles) will represent Ohio State at theNCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.

Ohio State men’s volleyball team survived a late Loyola surgeto top the Ramblers 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) in aMIVA match Friday night in St. John Arena.
Senior Chen Levitan led the Buckeyes with a career-high 19 kills andfinished with two service aces. Sophomore Michael Henchy totaled 15 kills, while Andrew Lutz had 14 with 10 digs. Senior Grayson Overman had 11 kills with a team-best 4 blocks (1s, 3a)and libero Brenan Anderson had a match-high 12 digs.
Ohio State dropped a 3-0 (13-25, 20-25, 23-25) match to No. 10Lewis Saturday night in St. John Arena. The loss is the first forthe Buckeyes in MIVA play, falling to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in theleague.
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz totaled 10 kills to lead the Buckeyes, whilesophomore Michael Henchy finished with seven. Sophomore libero Brennan Anderson had a team-best nine digs and senior Grayson Overman totaled five blocks (2s, 3a) to lead thesquad.
Ohio State travels west for a pair of MIVA matches against GrandCanyon March 8-9. The Buckeyes and the Antelopes face off at 9 p.m.ET both days in Phoenix.
