COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University awarded Angel Aja (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), a senior men’s volleyball player, and Laura Murray (Woodbridge, Va.), a senior on the pistol team, the Big Ten Medal of Honor Wednesday at the 2000 Scholar-Athlete Banquet held at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The prestigious award was given to a female and male student-athlete who has demonstrated athletic and academic excellence. It was established by the conference office in 1914 and is awarded at each member institution to a student-athlete in the graduating class. An additional award for the top female was instituted in 1982. This honor includes a post graduate scholarship for the recipients who would like to pursue a graduate or professional program at Ohio State.
A four-year starter and letterwinner at the setting position, Aja led the OSU men’s volleyball team to three Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Conference Championships and to the finals of the 2000 NCAA National Championship. He was first-team All-America in 1998, a three-time all-conference team member, the 1999 NCAA statistical champion in assists, and 1998-99 MIVA statistical champion. In his final campaign, Aja was named the MIVA tournament Most Valuable Player, MIVA Player of the year, NCAA Championship All-Tournament team, and second-team All-America. In addition to MIVA and NCAA honors, he also was tabbed Most Valuable Player by his teammates and holds four OSU records, including career assist leader. He is a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and a three-time academic all-Big Ten recipient. A business marketing major, Aja plans to pursue a graduate degree in business.
Laura Murray, a three-time letterwinner for the Ohio State pistol team, was an instrumental part in assisting her team to the 2000 National Intercollegiate Pistol Team Championship. Other team titles include 1999 and 2000 first-place finishes in the standard pistol, free pistol and standard pistol team events, and third place in the 1999 Women’s Air Pistol Team event. Individually, Murray earned second place in women’s sport pistol in 1999, then in 2000 took first place in the women’s sport pistol, air pistol, and ROTC standard pistol events. Leading her team to a national championship by claiming the three individual titles, Murray was honored with first-team All-America status. She is a member of the Ohio State Navy ROTC program and has been successful in balancing the demands placed on a collegiate athlete, ROTC cadet, and student in nursing. She received the Midshipman Star Award for excellence in academics, physical fitness and military aptitude, and the ROTC Academic Achievement award. She was named to the dean’s list six times, was a three-time scholar-athlete, and was inducted into the Anchor and Chain ROTC Honor Society. Upon graduation this spring, she will launch an exciting nursing career as a Naval officer and also plans to continue her shooting career with an eye on an Olympic medal.
A total of 323 Ohio State student-athletes were recognized at the banquet, including the following seniors who were honored with annual awards.
Corwin A. Fergus Memorial Award winners: Megan Hura, crew (Ravenna, Ohio), Nikki Frezza, synchronized swimming (Cicero, N.Y.), Midge Petraglia, crew (Worthington, Ohio), Jason Fox, swimming (Goshen, Ind.) and Katy Traeger, soccer (Littleton, Colo.). Fergus was a member of the Ohio State football team from 1912-1914. The award includes postgraduate scholarships which are given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics and have demonstrated positive qualities of character and citizenship.
John T. Sr. and Hulda E. Edwards Award winner: Allison Volz, sychronized swimming (Cincinnati, Ohio). This award is given to a scholar-athlete who is enrolling in professional or graduate school at Ohio State. The recipient will have demonstrated academic and athletic achievement as well as a high quality of character and a positive attitude toward the American free enterprise system.
Irving and Melvin Schottenstein Award winner Katy Traeger, women’s soccer (Littleton, Colo.). This award was established in 1976 and was among the first designed to specifically honor the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics at Ohio State. The recipient is provided with a postgraduate scholarship in the program of her choice at OSU. The athlete chosen to receive this award has demonstrated academic and athletic success and has contributed to the community through involvement in civic or university organizations.
Leann Grimes-Davidge Award winner Tarin Forbes, synchronized swimming (Carrieri, Costa Rica). This award is given in honor of the former Ohio State tennis champion. Grimes-Davidge won four Big Ten tennis titles and represented Ohio State at the national level. The recipient of this award is the female athlete who best exemplifies Leann’s outstanding qualities of athletic performance, scholarship, character, campus or community involvement and leadership.
