Women’s Volleyball Defeats Miami, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (5-2) women’s volleyball squad overcame a 1-0 Miami (4-7) lead to win 3-1 (22-30, 30-24, 30-17, 30-21) Wednesday night in Oxford. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 23 kills adding 11 digs, three ace serves and a career-high six blocks (2-4) for the Buckeyes. Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) contributed 11 kills each for Ohio State. Miami’s Kristen Walters had a team-high 12 kills for the RedHawks with Tara Buroker adding 10.
The Buckeyes held a 17-16 lead in game one before the RedHawks scored eight consecutive points to open a 24-17 lead. Miami held the lead, winning the game, 30-22. The RedHawks hit .441 in the game to .211 for Ohio State.
Tied at 16 in game two, Ohio State with a Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill and two Miami errors took a 19-16 lead. At 21-20, Ohio State, two Miami errors, an ace serve by Gordon and a Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) kill opened a 25-20 Buckeye lead. Ohio State closed out the game at 30-24 to tie the match at one game each. The Buckeyes hit .263 for the game to .114 for Miami.
Ohio State broke a two-all tie in game three with five straight points (7-2). The run included two Gordon kills, a kill by Grant, a Gordon-Grant block and a Miami error. The RedHawks cut the margin to one at 7-6 before a Miami error, a Gordon ace, a Miller kill and a Grant-Whalen block made it 11-6, OSU. Again Miami responded to cut the margin to 12-11. Ohio State came back with an eight-point run to open a 21-11 lead. The run contained kills by Miller and McCarthy, a McCarthy-D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) block and five RedHawk errors. OSU held the lead going on to win, 30-17. The Buckeyes hit .333 for the game to -.138 for Miami.
The Buckeyes opened game four with a seven-point run. Gordon’s three kills, one from Grant, an ace by Shackleford, a solo block from Gordon and a Grant-Gordon block completed the run. Miami responded to tie the game at 11. With the help of seven more kills by Gordon in the game, OSU built the lead again to the final 30-21 score. Ohio State hit .441 for the game to .207 for the RedHawks. OSU’s Gordon had 10 kills, two digs and four blocks (2-2) in the game.
For the match, Ohio State hit .306 to .165 for Miami. The Buckeyes had a 62-44 margin in kills while Miami had a six-five advantage in aces. The RedHawks gave up 14 service aces to 13 for OSU. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 51-43 margin in digs with OSU’s Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) recording a match-high 12. At the net, Ohio State enjoyed an 11 to 8.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Gordon had a career/match-high six blocks (2 solos, 4 assists) in the contest. It was Gordon’s seventh consecutive match with 21 or more kills. It was her 55th straight match with double-figure kills.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday to host Bowling Green (8-3).
