COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team plays host to Illinois in a co-ed meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. John Arena.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS
Standing as the No. 3 team in the nation, Illinois boasts all except one competitor from the roster of a year ago. Sophomores Adam Pummer and Justin Spring return to a squad that finished fifth in the NCAA championships and sixth in the Big Ten championships.
Spring is a two-time All-American and was a member of the USA World University Games team.
Other All-Americans back for another year with the Illinois program are Bob Rogers, Peter Shostchuk and Scott Wetterling.
Earlier in the season, the Fighting Illini took second at the Windy City, scoring a 214.425. Next, Illinois traveled to State College, Pa., where it was upset by then No. 5 Penn State, 212.775-219.150. Illinois bounced back with a victory over No. 8 Minnesota, posting a school record score of 218.900.
HEAD COACH YOSHI HAYASAKI
Yoshi Hayasaki enters his 28th year at the helm of the Fighting Illini program. Hayasaki has been a member of the Illinois staff since 1974. He served as head coach from 1974 through 1993, then took three years to manage both the men’s and women’s teams as the director of gymnastics. Upon returning to coach the men’s team in 1998 after a five- year hiatus, he led a team that failed to advance past regionals the previous year to a third-place finish at the NCAA championships. In 2000, Hayasaki was named the Central Regional Coach of the Year after leading the Orange and Blue to an eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships. He also earned the Honor Coach Award for his 25-plus years of service to the gymnastics coaching profession. In 2003, he led the team to fifth place finish and produced four individual All- Americans, which was the most for a UI team since 1962. A former two-time NCAA all-around champion and U.S. national champion, Hayasaki’s crowning moment at Illinois was leading the Illini to the 1989 NCAA national championship, earning his second consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year award and regional and national coach of the year honors along the way. It was the first NCAA championship in any sport at Illinois in over 30 years.
