What motivated you to join the military?
I wanted to be a police officer and it seemed like a good idea. You had to be 21 to be a cop in Ohio but could be a MP in the Army at 18.
What was the most challenging aspect of your time in the military, and how did you overcome it?
Being away from family for extended periods of time. Not having any say in what you do, where you go, or when you go there. Your military brothers become your family.
Can you share a memorable experience or moment during your service that had a lasting impact on you?
Serving in Afghanistan and Cuba right after September 11th. We did something that had never been done in the history of this country, transporting enemy detainees out of their country to be held in a secure location half way around the world.
What skills or values did you develop in the military that have been most useful in your life or career?
Patience. Leadership. The idea that there is absolutely nothing in this world that I cannot do. There is nothing in life or work that is that bad
How did serving in the military shape your perspective on leadership, teamwork, or personal growth?
Not just anyone can be a true leader. It is not something that can be learned, some people are born to lead. A true leader is selfless, first to stand up, protects their team, teaches others, and leads by example. You need to have trust in your team. Each person plays an important role.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining the military based on your own experience?
This is a tough question. I am beyond proud of what I did and would not change a thing. In my experience it gave back more than it took, but it was hard, and I have had friends and family who gave way more than they got back. It is a personal decision. One that should not be made lightly.
