Buckeyes Capture Team Titles to Open Season

Engel leads Buckeyes with first-place individual finish
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's and women's cross country teams swept the team titles at the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic hosted by Wright State at Fairborn Community Park in Fairborn, Ohio, Friday evening, in their first competition of the season. Led by women's race winner Addie Engel, all five Buckeye counters for both the men and women placed in the Top 11 of the 5k events.

The No. 16 Buckeye Women at the Mike Baumer XC Classic
Addie Engel was the women's champion for the second year in a row. In all, the Buckeye women had five of the Top 8 finishers and nine in the Top 20. Daniella Santos was third, followed by Aniya Mosley in fourth. Akemi Von Scherr and Gia Napoleon were seventh and eighth, respectively, to close out the Buckeye counters, with all five posting personal bests, and Annie Allen and Sydney Paul also ran PRs. Freshmen Lilly Eckels, Zoee Lehman and Olivia Oiler marked their collegiate debuts and senior Amelia Figler ran her first cross country race for the Buckeyes.

The Top 5 Buckeye men all placed in the Top 11. Zubin Jha led the way with a third-place finish. Kevin Agnew was sixth, Keegan Freyhof seventh, Colby Adams ninth and freshman Liam Shaughnessy, in his first collegiate race, was 11th. Freshman Will McGraw also made his collegiate debut and sophomore transfer Zach Beneteau ran his first race in the Scarlet and Gray. Jha, Adams, Giovanni Copploe and Keegan Souhan all improved their times from last year's season-opening 5K, which had been the personal best for each. Returnees Agnew and Freyhof were racing a cross country 5k for the first time.

Both the men and women will head to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Classic next Saturday. The men's 8k is set for an 11:30 a.m. ET start, with the women's 5k to follow at 12:10 p.m. ET.
Wisconsin will also host the Big Ten Championships Oct. 17 and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 10.
