COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s golf head coach Lisa Strom has announced the renaming of the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The tournament will now be called the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational, in honor of longtime Buckeye head coach Therese Hession.
“Coach Hession is so well-respected in college golf and, by naming the event in her honor, we are recognizing all she has given to the game, and especially to Ohio State golf,” said Strom. “From coaches to players, Coach Hession has impacted the lives of so many people around her; her legacy will continue on for years to come. I have nothing but the deepest respect and gratitude for all she has provided me as a student-athlete, colleague, mentor, and friend. This honor is so well-deserved.”
Hession served the Ohio State Department of Athletics for 30 years as the head women’s golf coach, and, in her final four years, as the Director of Men’s and Women’s Golf.
Hession finished her career with a winning percentage of over 66 percent; she faced nearly 5,000 opponents in her time at the helm of the Ohio State program. She was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year seven times and was honored as the NCAA Coach of the Year twice. Hession led the Buckeyes to 11 Big Ten Championships, 18 NCAA Championship appearances and 26 NCAA Regional appearances.
“It is a great honor for me to have the Lady Buckeye Invitational in my name,” Hession said. “It has a rich history in Big Ten women’s golf and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.”
As head coach, Hession led the Buckeyes to 11 team wins at the Lady Buckeye. She was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
