COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the Big Ten Conference opener for both squads, the match pitting the No. 22 Ohio State wrestling team against No. 5 Penn State turned out to be a tough contest for the Buckeyes as they dropped a 42-3 decision to the Nittany Lions Sunday afternoon in Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.
Ohio State will resume action in the New Year at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Wrestling Duals Jan. 8-9 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Redshirt sophomore C.J. Magrum was the lone Buckeye to win a match on the day. The Oak Harbor, Ohio, native beat Justin Ortega, 8-2, at 197 pounds.
Ohio State was well aware the match at Penn State would be a challenge as the Nittany Lions boast six Top 20 wrestlers, including No. 3 David Taylor at 157 pounds. Taylor’s 14-1 major decision over Buckeye senior Colt Sponseller seemingly summed up the day for the Scarlet and Gray. Sponseller had entered the match 11-1 overall, outscored his opponents 77-30 and pinned two before losing to Taylor.
Penn State quickly jumped out a 7-0 lead after the 125 and 133 bouts. Redshirt-junior Bo Touris, who received his second start of the season at 125 pounds dropped a 9-1 major decision to No. 18 Frank Martellotti. It appeared sophomore Ian Paddock would possibly bring the Buckeyes to within one in the 133-pound bout after taking a 4-3 lead in the second period. However, Martellotti scored an escape, takedown, 2-point nearfall and owned riding time in the final period to win, 9-4.
Still very much in the match, the Buckeyes found themselves in a deeper hole following consecutive pins at 141 and 149 pounds. Freshman Randy Languis was pinned in 31 seconds, while redshirt-junior Sean Nemec was taken down in 5:56.
At 165 pounds, redshirt-sophomore Jared Kusar lost by four points to Nick Fischer and the Nittany Lions increased their lead to 26-0. A Buckeye forfeit at 174 pounds gave Penn State another six team points before the 184-pound bout between Buckeye redshirt-freshman Peter Capone and No. 12 Ed Ruth. Capone dropped an 18-6 major decision before Magrum gave the Scarlet and Gray its first team points of the afternoon.
Wrapping up the day, No. 6 Cameron Wade pinned redshirt-junior Zach Stolarsky in 2:06.
