COLUMBUS, Ohio Steve Brent, a three-time captain for the Buckeyes, has been named an assistant coach for the Ohio State men’s hockey team, head coach John Markell announced Wednesday. Brent returns to Ohio State after spending 10 of the last 11 years on the coaching staff. After playing four years with the squad, he began his coaching career as the volunteer assistant in 1997-98 before moving into a full-time assistant coaching position for eight seasons (1998-99 through 2005-06). He was the team’s volunteer assistant last season.
“I’m excited the University and the department of athletics have given me the opportunity to return to something I have so much passion for,” Brent said. “I’m ready to bring energy and ideas to the hockey program to help the team be successful.”
Markell is looking forward to having Brent on his staff once again.
“Steve will be a tremendous asset to the program,” Markell said. “We’re happy to have him back as part of our full-time staff. His enthusiasm for the game and Ohio State sets a great example for our student-athletes.”
Brent was on the Buckeyes’ staff for five NCAA tournament appearances, including the program’s first NCAA Frozen Four berth in 1998. He also was on the coaching staff when the team won three games in three days to claim the 2004 CCHA tournament title. He has been a part of 203 wins while a coach for the squad.
A four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes from 1994-97, Brent played in 123 games and ranks third in Ohio State’s career record book for penalty minutes (477). He totaled 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points for the Scarlet and Gray and was named the team’s 1994 George Burke Most Valuable Freshman, as well as the Joseph W. Smith Best Defensive Player in 1997. He earned Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honors and received a Corwin A. Fergus Memorial Award.
Brent replaces Casey Jones, who left Ohio State to return to Cornell, his alma mater, as the associate head coach for the Big Red.
