Members of Ohio State Men’s Tennis Team Fair Well at USTA Pro Event – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A trio of Buckeyes from the Ohio State men’s tennis team had a successful campaign at the Nielsen United States Tennis Association Pro Tennis Championship. Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge paired up to advance to the doubles quarterfinal and teammate Bryan Koniecko partnered with Luis Manuel Flores of Mexico to also qualify for the round of eight at the USTA Pro Circuit event that runs from July 2-8 at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka, Ill.
In the opening round, Eberly and Kronauge rebounded after dropping the first set to No. 4 seed Thiago Alves and Marcio Torres of Brazil to take the last two sets for a final score of 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 as wildcards. They then faced Scott Oudsema and Ryan Sweeting of the U.S., and dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Also playing as wildcards, Koniecko and Flores moved on from the first round after beating Luka Gregorc of Slovakia and Tobias Kamke of Germany, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, the pair met Nicholas Monroe of the U.S. and Izak Van Der Merwe of Russia. After taking the first set, 6-3, Monroe and Van Der Merwe went on to win the second set 6-3 and the final set 10-7.
The trio also competed in the qualifying singles bracket, with Eberly and Kronauge advancing to the round of 16 as wildcards. Eberly topped Chris Drake of the U.S., 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to No. 1 seed Phillip Simmonds (U.S.), 6-3, 6-2. Kronauge opened with a win against Matt Bruch (U.S.), 6-3, 6-1. He then lost, 6-1, 7-6 (4) to No. 6 seed and Russian Fritz Wolmarans. Koniecko dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to No. 2 seed Kevin Anderson of Russia in the opening round.
