COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team defeated Kenyon College, 207.00-87.00, but lost to Ohio University, 152.00-148.00, in a double dual meet Saturday in Gambier, Ohio. The Buckeyes are 1-1 on the season.
The Buckeye swimmers, under the direction of ninth-year coach Jeanne Fleck, won seven of the 12 individual swimming events and had five second-place finishes in support. Coach Vince Panzano’s diving squad swept all three places on both the one- and three-meter boards.
“I am very disappointed in the loss to Ohio,” Fleck said. “We had some swimmers step up to the challenge and others did not. We have such a young, promising group of freshman. I know now where they need to swim and what weak spots I need to fill. We have a lot of work to do, but we will keep working hard and we will be where we need to be at the end of the season.”
Leading the swimming contingent were double winners Colleen Schweitzer and Katelyn Brix. Schweitzer, a sophomore, won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.00) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.08), events that Fleck is confident will be a strong area for the Buckeyes this year. The freshman Brix took first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.20) and the 400 individual medley (4:30.08).
Additionally, freshman Anita Beck took first in the 200 butterfly (2:05.22) and second in the 200 freestyle. Sophomore co-captain Linda Lund-Kristiansen captured the 100 freestyle (:52.80) and placed second in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. And Samantha Cheverton won the 500 freestyle (4:55.37) and was second in the 100 backstroke.
Sophomore Jill Lockhart, 10th in the 200 backstroke at the 2007 Big Ten Championships, took second in the event in this meet.
In diving, junior Chelsea Davis took first on the one-meter board with 300.23 points and was followed by freshmen Bianca Alvarez and Kristen Asman. Alavarez won the three-meter event with 300.98 points and was followed by Asman and then Davis.
The Buckeyes are back in action Friday, Nov. 9 in a co-ed dual meet with the Ohio State men’s team against the University of Washington.
