Chelsea Luker of the synchronized swimming team finished firstin the solo event with a score of 90.883 and teamed up with LaurenMarsh to capture the duet competition (90.166) in a tri-meetagainst Miami (Ohio) and Walsh University Saturday. Wrestlingsenior Keaton Anderson (Sr., Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) wenta perfect 5-0 as he helped lead Ohio State to a fourth place finishat the 2003 NWCA/ Cliff Keen National Duals. Included in the fivewins were a pin, a major decision and decision victories over threenationally ranked opponents. Anderson topped No. 4 and two-timeAll-American Shane Roller of Oklahoma State 8-5 in the semfinalloss to the top-ranked Cowboys and defeated No. 6 Gray Maynard ofMichigan State in the 19-17 second round win over the Spartans by ascore of 8-6. Anderson has now won 11 straight matches en route toa 23-1 mark on the season. Dan Taylor (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) set a school record in the weight throw as he capturedfirst place in both the weight throw (19.45 m) and shot put (21.09m) at the Illinois Invitational Saturday in Champaign, Ill. Withhis performance in the shot put, Taylor, an All-American in 2002,has climbed to the top spot nationally in the event.

Two men’s soccer players, Andy Rosenband and Jake Traeger, weredrafted Friday in the 2003 Major League Soccer SuperDraft in KansasCity. Rosenband was chosen as the 52nd overall pick in the 6thround by the Dallas Burn. Traeger also was selected in the sixthround by the Columbus Crew at No. 58. Rosenband and Traeger are thefirst Buckeyes to be selected in the MLS Draft. The women’sgymnastics team won one and lost one Friday in a tri-meet with N.C.State and Maryland in Raleigh, N.C. The Buckeyes defeated Maryland,192.275-191.900, but lost to N.C. State 193.850-192.275. TheBuckeyes were victorious over both schools in the vault and floorexercise. Freshman Jill Weber led the way for the Buckeyes on vaultwith a score of 9.800, helping OSU place first in the event with ascore of 47.975. Tiffanie Janke posted a score of 9.600 to helpsecure the win on vault. On the floor exercise, freshman ShelbyWarner led the way with a 9.900. Elizabeth Meaney helped secure thewin on the floor exercise with a score of 9.875. Rickee Wirtzbergerand Emily Sineway also chipped in with solid performances, bothturning in a score of 9.775. The synchronized swimming team kickedoff its 2003 season in style with wins over Miami (Ohio) and WalshUniversity Saturday in a tri-meet at the varsity pool at the MikePeppe Aquatic Center. The Buckeyes ended the meet with a team totalof 92.0 points, ahead of the Cavaliers (75.0) and Marlins (31.5).Chelsea Luker finished first in the solo event with a score of90.883 while teammate Heather Burdick placed second with a 87.167mark. Luker and Lauren Marsh teamed up to win the duet competition(90.166) while Brianne Pineiro and Isla Turner finished second inthe event (86.500). Bethany Galla, Laura Green and Erin Schmidtcombined for a winning effort in the trio routine with a score of87.000. Women’s basketball sophomore Caity Matter earned Big TenPlayer of the Week honors for her performances at Wisconsin (Jan.16) and at Northwestern (Jan. 19). Matter was a combined 12-for-21(.571) from behind the 3-point line, averaged 25.0 points, 5.5boards and had only one turnover in a total 63 minutes of play.Ohio State beat Wisconsin (57-42) and Northwestern (63-42) and isnow 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, which is the best 16-gamestart for a Buckeye squad since the 1992-93 season, when Ohio Statewas 14-2. The No. 6/8 men’s hockey team moved to 17-4-2 on theseason with a two-game home sweep of Bowling Green last week. Theteam beat the Falcons, 6-3, in the opener and 6-1 in the finale.Five Buckeyes – JB Bittner, Paul Caponigri, R.J. Umberger, ScottMay and Nate Guenin – had four-point weekends. Junior Doug Andresswas named the CCHA Defensive Player of the Week following hisoutstanding performance against the Falcons. The Buckeyes, on a10-game unbeaten streak, travel to face Nebraska-Omaha thisweekend. The Buckeyes and Mavericks will face off at 8:05 p.m. ESTFriday and Saturday in the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Jeremy Wurtzman,a junior on the men’s tennis team and freshman Scott Green advancedto the semifinals round in doubles action on Jan. 18, at TheMet/Rice University Indoor Tennis Tournament in Houston, Texas. Theduo defeated Rice’s Matthias Mathaes and Robert Searle, 9-7 in thefirst round of 16 pairs. In quarterfinals action, Wurtzman andGreen sealed a victory over Ryan Haymond and Alistair Jenkins fromTexas, 8-6. The pair concluded their tournament run in thesemifinals with a loss to Rice’s Richard and William Barker, 8-5.The Buckeyes open their 2002-03 season at home against Butler andToldeo. The match will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday at JesseOwens West Recreational Center. Ohio State is ranked No. 24(Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason results) in thecountry and features players ranked at the national level. Wurtzmanis ranked an Ohio State record high of No. 7 and senior Vincent Ngholds the No. 45 position. Ohio State will play host to Notre Dameat noon on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the West Recreational Center. The No.3 men’s gymnastics team returns to action Jan. 25 in St. John Arenain a duel match against Chicago-Illinois after its first placefinish at the Windy City Invitational and a week-off. Randy Monahanwon multiple honors after his first place all-around finish at theWindy City including Big Ten Men’s Gymnast of the Week and NCAAMen’s Gymnast of the Week named by Inside Gymnastics collegiateeditor Jerry Wright. The women’s tennis team commences its springcampaign Jan. 26 at Penn State. Sadhaf Pervez is the highestpreseason ranked Buckeye at No. 75 in the nation and No. 7regionally. The Buckeyes will be on the road until Feb. 14 whenthey play host to Michigan State. The men’s swimming and divingteam improved to 7-1 on the season and 1-1 in Big Ten play with a147-96 romp of the Michigan State Spartans Friday at the Mike PeppeAquatic Center. Tommy Seay (So., Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) was atriple winner for the Buckeyes, taking the 200 IM and the 100 free,and was a part of the team’s 400 freestyle relay win. MitchRicheson (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Greenwood) swept diving eventsfor the fourth time at dual meets this season. The team will finishthe dual meet portion of its season at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a meeting with arch rivalNo. 4 Michigan. The women’s swimming and diving team fell to 7-3 onthe season and 0-2 in the conference in a 138-105 loss to MichiganState Friday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. Freshman DeannaStrunk (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) was the winner of two of the threeswimming events the Buckeyes took on the evening. Strunk placedfirst in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.31) as well as the200 butterfly (2:07.22). Buckeye senior Natalia Diea (Austin,Texas/University of Texas) swept diving events. The team will taketo the road and head to Champaign. Ill. for a tri-meet against Iowaand Illinois, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25. The women’s hockey teamsplit a series against St. Cloud State last weekend. The Buckeyesshut out the Huskies 1-0 Saturday and lost 2-1 Sunday. OSU outshotSCSU 23-19 in game one and again 33-19 in game two of the series.Junior Jeanne Chapple scored the Buckeyes’ lone goal Saturday andsophomore Jeni Creary scored Sunday. Ohio State returns home for amatch-up against Mercyhurst at 2:05 p.m. Jan. 25 in Columbus. OSUthen travels to Findlay, Ohio, where it will battle Findlay for theOhio Cup at 2 p.m. Jan. 26. The Buckeyes will be looking to keepthe Ohio Cup champions title when they battle the Oilers during the2002-03 Ohio Cup game. Ohio State has held the reins of the awardfor the last two years. This is the third year for the event. Themen’s basketball team begins a difficult stretch in which the squadwill play six of the next eight games on the road. The Buckeyestravel to Indiana for a nationally-televised contest againstIndiana (7 p.m./Tuesday/ESPN). Leading the effort will be seniorguard Brent Darby, ranked No. 3 among all scores in the Big Tenwith just under 18 points a game. Junior forward Shun Jenkins, whoscored 22 points in Ohio State’s win over the Hoosiers Jan. 11, hasrecorded double-doubles in his last two outings for the Buckeyes.The No. 5 -ranked wrestling team served as the host to the 2003NWCA/ Cliff Keen National Duals for the second-straight season andonce again earned a Top 5 standing in the event as the Buckeyestopped Ohio University (37-4) and conference foe Michigan State(19-17) in the preliminary rounds before falling to No. 1 OklahomaState 23-14 in the semifinals. The Buckeyes rebounded with a 28-12win over No. 4 Cornell in the consolation semifinal before droppingthe third place match to No. 2 Iowa to finish fourth in the two-dayevent. In the first team-scoring event of the season, the men’s andwomen’s track and field teams placed first, defeating Illinois andIllinois State Saturday in Champaign, Ill. Both men’s and women’steams received strong showings in the field events. Dan Taylor(Jr., Middlefield, Ohio/ Berkshire) capped off another strongshowing in the shot put, throwing a distance of 19.45m and in theweight throw with a toss of 21.09m, claiming first place in bothevents. Taylor’s mark in the weight throw is a new school record inthe event. He is also the No. 1 performer in the shot put amongnational campetition. The women also received strong performancesin the field events, receiving first-place finishes from highjumper Tami Smith (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Westland ), pole-vaulterBecky Heintz (Jr., Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and throwers Erin Carter(Sr., Logan,Ohio/Logan) and Keturah Lofton (Jr.,Zanesville,Ohio/Zanesville). The men’s lacrosse team is ranked 19thin the 2003 Inside Lacrosse Preseason coaches poll, while threeBuckeyes – senior attackman Curtis Smith (Victoria, BritishColumbia), junior defenseman Greg Bice (Helotes, Texas) and juniorgoalie Tony Russo (Fallston, Md.) – received 2003 Inside LacrosseFace Off Yearbook Preseason All-America honorable mentionaccolades.
