10th-ranked women’s volleyball went 1-2 last weekend at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. OSU lost 0-3 to No. 4 Hawaii and No. 11 UCLA and defeated No. 21 Colorado 3-2. OSU’s Stacey Gordon was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had 13 kills and 15 digs against Hawaii, 29 kills and 16 digs against Colorado and 22 kills and eight digs against UCLA. OSU hosts the Buckeye Classic this Friday with Eastern Kentucky playing Kent State at 5 p.m. and Ohio State hosting Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Saturday’s matches are at 5 p.m. (consolation) and 7 p.m. (championship).
The women’s soccer team (0-2, 0-0) makes the short jaunt to Dayton, Ohio for the Dayton/ Marriott Flyer Classic this weekend. The Buckeyes will first battle Conference USA preseason favorite Marquette University (1-1, 0-0) in the tournament opener on Friday night at 6 p.m. OSU will conclude the invitational on Sunday vs. Georgetown University (0-1, 0-0) at 3 p.m.
The No. 4 women’s golf team shot a 293 in the second round at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan. The Buckeyes have posted rounds of 293-293 (586) to place second after two rounds behind fellow American team Oklahoma State who leads (281-283=564). The 20th annual Topy Cup features competition between the United States and Japan and is being held at the par 72 Tanagura Country Club (6,061 yards). Ohio State sophomore Lindsay Knowlton (Toronto, Ont./Havergal) stands alone in fifth place, shooting a 145 (72-73). Allison Hanna (Jr., Portland, Ore./David Douglas) led Ohio State in the second round and is for sixth place at 146 (75-71). Kristen White (So., Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) is in 11th (73-74=147) while Jennifer Selfinger (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Groveport Madison) is in 12th (73-75=148). Jennifer Borowiec is tied for 21st overall (76-80=156). The final round is scheduled for Thursday.
The Ohio State men’s soccer team claimed the 2002 Scarlet and Gray Classic Championship Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Richmond in the tournament’s title game. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the young 2002 season. Leading the charge for the Buckeyes was forward Andy Rosenband (Sr., Hammond, Ind.) who scored his second and third goals of the season. After a scoreless first half, Rosenband opened scoring in the 51st minute by knocking in a Justin Cook (Jr., Winter Springs, Fla.) pass from the top of the 6-yard box. Rosenband would add an insurance goal in the 86th minute, also from Cook. Chad Brown (So./Rockford, Ill.), meanwhile, earned his second shutout in his two starts this season. Cook was named tournament MVP for his efforts in the win over Richmond as well as in a 2-0 victory over East Carolina on Friday. Rosenband, who notched three goals in the tournament’s two games, along with Buckeye captain Tony Earp (Sr./Plantation, Fla.) and midfielder Jake Traeger (Sr./Littleton, Colo.) were also named to the all-tournament team
Rosenband was selected as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Scarlet and Gray Classic. Rosenband scored three goals in two games, helping the Buckeyes claim the Scarlet and Gray Classic championship. Rosenband connected on three of his nine shots, tallying six total points. Rosenband, OSU’s leading scorer in 2001, scored one goal in a 2-0 win against East Carolina Friday night and scored two goals in the second half against a scrappy Richmond squad Sunday to help the Buckeyes improve their record to 2-0 on the young season. The Buckeyes will head west this week to take part in the NIKE/Goal Rush Classic in Fresno, Calif. Ohio State will take on Loyola-Marymount Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Fresno State Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Both times are local to site.
The field hockey team opened the 2002 season by going 2-1 in California. The Buckeyes lost to Stanford, 1-0 in overtime Saturday. They came back and shut out Pacific, 3-0 Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif. OSU defeated Cal, 1-0 in overtime Tuesday in Palo Alto, Calif. Mariana Solorzano scored two-consecutive game winning goals against Pacific and Cal.
Joe Breschi, head men’s lacrosse coach, has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Men’s Lacrosse Team, the conference announced. The 57-member team was voted on by the four league institutions that sponsor the sport (Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia), as decided by the league’s 50th Anniversary Committee. Breschi, a defenseman for the Tar Heels from 1987-90, was a first team All-America selection in 1990 and an honorable mention All-America pick in 1989. He was a two-time first team All-ACC honoree (1989 and ’90) and was the MVP of the ACC tournament in 1990. UNC won three conference championships during Breschi’s time with the squad and he served as team captain as a senior.
The women’s rowing team begins training for its 2002 fall season Monday Sept. 9. The team is coming off its second best finish in program history, taking fifth at the 2002 NCAA Championships. The fall schedule includes three head races and kicks off Oct. 5 in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the Head of the Ohio.
