COLUMBUS, Ohio–Jim Brown, Ohio State head men’s golf coach, announced the addition of Darren Lundgren (Baldwin, Mo./Parkway West) and Matt Boudreau (St. Ann, Ill./Kankakee Bishop McNamara) to the Buckeye golf roster. Each signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent last week to play for the Buckeyes.
Brown said the duo should be a factor early in their OSU careers.
“This is the best class I have signed here in the last couple years,” Brown said. “Both have a chance to have an immediate impact on our team next year. With us hosting the NCAA Tournament in the spring of 2002, they will have a chance to be a part of that experience.”
The pair bring impressive resumes to Ohio State’s program.
“Both have a lot of experience and are used to winning,” Brown said. “These guys saw an opportunity to play right away. We are certainly happy to have them become a part of our program.”
As a senior, Boudreau won four high school tournaments (Macomb Invitational, All-City Tournament, Dunlap Invitational, Illinois High School Association regional tournament). He finished second and his high school team won the Illinois Class A State Tournament.
Boudreau, the son of Mike and Ellen Boudreau, was the 2000 Illinois State Junior Amateur Champion and finished first in the Chick Evans Junior Amateur Championship held at the Steeple Chase Country Club in Mundelien, Ill. He also shot a course record 63 (beating the old record by five strokes) at the Railside Country Club in Gibson, Ill.
In the summer of 1999, Boudreau took first in both stroke play (70-72=142) and match play at the Chick Evans Junior Amateur.
Lundgren was selected as the top golf prospect in the country by the National Scouting Report in May. He is a 2000 American Junior Golf and National High School Coaches Association All-American (one of 25 nationally). In the classroom, he was selected a 2000 All-American Scholar Athlete. Lundgren, the son of Dennis and Carol Lundgren, has been successful on the local, national and international scene. In August, he played in St. Andrews, Scotland for Team USA in a win over Canada (20.5-10.5) at the World Junior Golf Cup 2000 Grand Finale.
As a high school junior, Lundgren won the national Pepsi Junior Masters and the PJGT (junior golf tour) event. As a senior, he claimed the Pepsi Little People’s tournament with rounds of 70-72 to defeat 148 other players for the title.
In and around his home state of Missouri, Lundgren owns 11 Top 4 finishes since his sophomore season in high school. He won a pair of St. Louis District events as a sophomore, the Junior Golf Championship and World Junior Cup Regional Qualifier as a junior and the Gateway PGA Qualifier as a senior last July.
