1997-98 Ohio State Men’s Tennis
In a thrilling comeback, the Ohio State men’s tennis team stunned Miami (O.) 4-3 in dual match action today. Early on, the Buckeyes would capture the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. However, Miami would tie Ohio State by winning three singles matches.
Playing in the No. 1 position, Chris Porter (Fr., Canton, Ohio) would post a three-set victory (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) over Miami’s David Abelson that became the deciding factor for the Buckeyes’ win. “After winning the second set and hearing the crowd pulling for me, I felt the momentum swing my way,” Porter said. “I knew it was my match.” Porter was down in the third set by three match points, but the freshman would break Abelson’s serve and gain three points to lead by a point (6-5). At 40-15 and on the final point, Abelson would double fault to give Porter the victory. Other key wins came from Vo Chu (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and Bob Wellstein (Fr., Perrysburg, Ohio), who both downed their opponents in two-sets.
