Coach John Daly’s Bio
COLUMBUS, Ohio-John Daly, longtime Ohio State men’s tennis coach, has relinquished his coaching duties. Daly, who coached for 28 years at the university, has been the senior member of the Ohio State coaching staff, since the departure of Woody Hayes.
He is currently tied at No. 4 on the years of service list as a head coach in the OSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics behind Michael Peppe (34 yrs., men’s swimming, 1930-63), Larry Snyder (30 yrs., men’s track, 1932-1942, 1946-1964) and Casey Fredericks (29 yrs., wrestling, 1948-1976). Daly is tied with Woody Hayes (28 yrs., football, 1951-1978) and Robert Kepler (28 yrs., men’s golf, 1938-1965).
Daly, who has held several other non-coaching assignments during his tenure, will remain with the university and will be involved in other areas of higher education, Andy Geiger, OSU Director of Athletics, said.
With 445 wins in his career, 427 at Ohio State, Daly has more victories than all previous Buckeye tennis coaches combined. He also ranks second in the Big Ten in career coaching victories.
Daly began his career at Northern Illinois where he led the Huskies to an 18-3 record in 1970. He then joined the OSU staff in 1972.
His teams have finished among the top four in the Big Ten 13 times, including the 1991 Big Ten Championship season.
Daly’s tenure has produced 31 all-Big Ten selections and six Big Ten singles and doubles champions. Three all-Americans and one NCAA singles semifinalist, along with 30 academic all-Big Ten honorees have played for Daly at Ohio State.
Ty Tucker, an OSU assistant the last two seasons, will serve as the interim head coach for the 1999-2000 season.
Tucker, a Zanesville, Ohio native, is a two-time All-American at Ohio State and member of the 1991 OSU Big Ten Championship team. He is a three-time all-Big Ten selection. In 1990 and 1991 he reached the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Championships.
He spent his entire career at the No. 1 singles spot at OSU and compiled a record of 64-22, including a 25-win season in 1991.
Before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach and competing his undergraduate degree (B.A./Anthropology 1998), he competed on the professional tour achieving an ATP world ranking in the top 300 and a USTA men’s singles ranking of 35.
Ohio State will conduct a national search prior to the 2000-01 season to permanently fill the OSU head men’s tennis coach position.
