COLUMBUS, Ohio – True senior Jonathon Cooper, the wide-smiling, great culture-inducing team captain, terrific player and all around great guy, will red-shirt this 2019 season and return for a fifth-year senior season in 2020. Cooper has played in only three games so far this season.
Cooper, from near-by Gahanna, Ohio, and a graduate of Gahanna Lincoln, has played in 37 career games with 49 tackles, 10.5 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks. Last year, he started 13 games for the Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion Buckeyes. He established career highs with 25 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks on his way to earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors by the media and coaches. The year prior, as a sophomore in 2017, Cooper saw action in all 14 games playing alongside four defensive ends who would be drafted.
Off the field, Cooper has twice earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a consumer and family financial services major. He was a part of a Buckeyes Go International service-learning program last summer and spent a week in Costa Rica. The 15 Ohio State student-athlete facilitated sports activities with local youth, worked at a food bank, participated in a beach clean-up and engaged in cultural immersion and educational opportunities.
