COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Ohio State (6-1) opens the Big Ten Conference portion of the season at Indiana Friday. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. with the Big Ten Network set to carry all the action.
- Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes earned career dual victory No. 300 at the Collegiate Duals Dec. 20, 2022 in New Orleans. Ohio State defeated No. 21 Lehigh 23-12 for the historic win on the final day of the event. The Buckeyes also defeated Lock Haven, 39-3. No. 22 Northern Iowa earned a 19-13 win over Ohio State in the second dual of the competition.
- Ryan is 300-146-2 over his career, which includes 11 years at Hofstra (109-82-2) and 17 at Ohio State (191-64).
- The Buckeyes are 51-34-2 vs. Indiana all-time. The Buckeyes own an 11-match win streak vs. the Hoosiers and have won nine of the last meetings in Bloomington.
- The Buckeyes were one of 34 teams in the 2022 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Dec. 2-3. The Buckeyes finished tied for the No. 8 spot with 82.5 points. Sammy Sasso (149) won his bracket with a 5-0 record, which included wins over No. 7 Yahya Thomas of Northwestern and No. 5 Kyle Parco of Arizona State. Kaleb Romero finished fourth at 184 with Malik Heinselman (125) came in fifth.
- Sasso was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 2022 Cliff Keen Invitational and then earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors (12/6/22).
- Gavin Bell (184) and Mike Misita (HWT) both won their brackets at the 2022 Storm Open Dec. 4. Brady Koontz (125), Alex Flerlage (133) and Klay Reeves (149) finished second in their respective brackets.
- The No. 3 Buckeyes put together a pair of dual wins over the span of three days in mid-November at home vs. Columbia (W, 33-6) and at No. 17 North Carolina (W, 33-9). Tate Orndorff (HWT) posted a pair of victories by fall. Malik Heinselman (125), Jesse Mendez (133), Carson Kharchla (165), Kaleb Romero (184) and Gavin Hoffman (197) all won both their bouts in the wins.
- Sammy Sasso competed in the 2022 NWCA All-Start Classic Nov. 22 in Austin, Texas, in a Top 3 matchup with No. 2 Austin Gomez of Wisconsin. Sasso, who entered as the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, fell 10-9.
- Then No. 4 Ohio State defeated No. 14 Virginia Tech 18-13 Nov. 11 in Columbus to open the 2022-23 dual season. Eight of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or less. Nine of the matchups were won by decision. Redshirt freshman Paddy Gallagher earned his first dual victory in the 157 match. Tate Orndorff earned career win No. 75 at heavyweight. It was career win No. 295 for Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes.
- Tom Ryan and the Ohio State wrestling staff signed a class of four during the early NCAA singing period. Vinny Kilkeary, a 125-pounder from Latrobe (Pa.) High School, Rocco Welsh (174/184) of Waynesburg Central (Pa.) High School, Brock Herman (145) of Brecksville (Ohio) High School and Ryder Rogotzke (184) of Stillwater (Minnesota) High School, all signed national letters of intent to wrestle for Ryan and the Buckeyes next year.
