Ten students receive scholarships in event held at Ohio Stadium
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State athletic training staff held its annual banquet in Ohio Stadium May 29, where 175 family members and staff were in attendance to honor the achievements of the dedicated athletic training students. Ten students were rewarded with scholarships totaling nearly $11,000.
Allison Karhoff, a sophomore from Continental, Ohio, Rebecca Mustard, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, James Spengler, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio and Kristen Sutton, a sophomore from Lima, Ohio, all were recipients of the Ernest Biggs Athletic Training Scholarship. More commonly known as “Ernie,” Biggs served as head athletic trainer at Ohio State from 1945-72. He was the first athletic trainer inducted into the Ohio State Varsity “O” Hall of Fame in 1980 and was part of the charter class in the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 1990. An innovator at bridging science and sport, Biggs designed and patented a knee brace for use in football.
Stacy Dillis, a senior from Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Danielle Flege, a senior from Liberty Township, Ohio, received the Linda Weber Daniel Athletic Training Scholarship. Daniel served as an OSU athletic trainer from 1975 to her passing in 2000. A woman that wore many hats during her time in Columbus, Daniel worked as an assistant athletic trainer, co-head athletic trainer and director of rehabilitation services for the department of athletics and completed her master’s degree in physical therapy at Ohio State. Daniel is enshrined in both the OATA and Varsity “O” Hall of Fames.
Allison Geise, a junior from Sidney, Ohio, received the Billy A. Hill Athletic Training Scholarship. A former president of the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association, Hill served as an athletic trainer at Ohio State from 1971 to his passing in 1995. Hill’s time at Ohio State took on a variety of tasks including service as an assistant athletic trainer and co-head athletic trainer and head football trainer for the department of athletics. For his efforts, Hill is a prominent member of the OATA and Varsity “O” Hall of Fames.
Michael Krill, a junior from Camas, Wash., Caroline Lewis, a junior from Ravena, Ohio, and Zachary Smith, a sophomore from Centerburg, Ohio, were all recipients of the James Warfield Athletic Training Scholarship. James “Jimmy” Warfield was a member of the Cleveland Indians athletic training staff from 1969 to his passing in 2002, tending to 587 players, 62 coaches and 14 managers in those 32 years. Well respected around the Major League Baseball circuit, Warfield was honored as the American League athletic trainer for the 1981 and 1997 All Star Games.
Eighteen graduating senior athletic trainers were also recognized at the banquet. Dedicating three years of service to OSU athletics, these students include Shaun Barnhouse, Kate Benedict, Stacy Dillis, Brittany Farnsworth, Danielle Flege, Amy Hlopak, Kaitlin Kneisel, Masa Mizutani, Michael Nelson, Caitlin Parks, Tyler Patrick, Nathan Pickel, Dorian Pittmon, Erin Scheper, Jessica Stephens, Rachelle Tabat, Kirsten vonZychlin and Christopher Yoha.
Additionally, graduate assistant athletic trainers Kate Albers, Jeff Deits and Jarrett Schweim were honored for their completion of master’s degrees.
