Seniors Mason Jobst and Dakota Joshua and junior Tanner Laczynski, forwards on the Ohio State men’s hockey team, were selected to the 15-player Big Ten Preseason Watch List, the conference announced Monday. The watch list was voted on by the seven B1G coaches, with All-Americans Jobst and Laczynski unanimous picks.
Ohio State was selected first in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, voted on by the league’s coaches. Michigan and Notre Dame, which joined the Buckeyes in the 2018 Frozen Four, followed in second and third. Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State rounded out the preseason poll.
This is the first time since the CCHA coaches placed the 2005-06 Buckeyes first Ohio State has been No. 1 in a preseason conference coaches poll.
In the USCHO national preseason poll, the Buckeyes are ranked third, with two first place votes. Defending NCAA champion Minnesota Duluth is first in the poll, followed by Big Ten teams Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan. In all, five Big Ten teams are ranked in the Top 20. The third-place spot is the highest for the Buckeyes in a USCHO preseason poll; the squad was fourth entering the 1998-99 campaign. Full Poll
The Buckeyes return 21 players from the 2017-18 squad that was 26-10-5 overall and finished second in the Big Ten with a 14-8-2-1 ledger. Ohio State ranked in the Top 10 in the NCAA in scoring offense, defense, penalty killing and power play in 2018.
This is the third consecutive year Jobst, a two-time All-Big Ten honoree and a 2017 All-American, has been tabbed a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch. He leads all returning NCAA players with 128 career points (20 more than second place). He is tied for second nationally with 52 career goals, leads active players with 20 power play goals and is tied for fourth with four career shorthanded tallies. In 2017-18 the Buckeyes’ captain had 43 points, with 21 goals and 22 assists.
Laczynski was a First Team All-Big Ten and Second Team All-America selection in 2017-18. He led the Buckeyes with 47 points, on 17 goals and 30 assists, last season and earned Big Ten and NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team accolades. A draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, Laczynski enters his junior year with 79 career points (27g, 52a).
Joshua, an honorable mention All-Big Ten honoree, was an NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team selection in 2018. A Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick, he had a 15-11-26 line last season. In his career, Joshua has notched 78 points, with 32 goals and 46 assists.
