OMAHA, Neb. – Three Buckeyes were selected to the First Team All-Big Ten Conference baseball team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Senior co-captain infielder Nick Sergakis, junior left fielder Ronnie Dawson and junior left-handed pitcher Tanner Tully were each named to the first team list. It marks the first time the Buckeyes have registered three first team selections in a single season since the 2009 campaign.
The native of Columbus, Ohio, Sergakis garners his first career All-Big Ten honor after being one of the top hitters in the conference during the regular season. He is the only player in the Big Ten in the Top 10 in 10 different B1G batting categories, including second in doubles (18), third in on-base percentage (.474) and hit by pitches (16), fifth in slugging percentage (.573) and total bases (114), sixth in RBI (44) and home runs (8), seventh in walks (33), eighth in batting average (.352) and 10th in hits (70). He’s also stolen a season-high 13 bags this year. Transitioned recently to the Buckeyes’ lead-off man, Sergakis has reached base safely in 53 of 56 contests, starting the year on a career-high 28-game reached base streak. He’s started in three different positions in the infield too with 44 nods from the hot corner. He leads the team with 20 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI performances. Sergakis was also named the team’s Sportsmanship Award Winner.
Dawson, a native of Grove City, Ohio, receives his second All-Big Ten selection after being named a second team selection during his freshman campaign. He has started and appeared in all 56 games in left field. The Buckeyes’ three-hole hitter is ranked in the Top 10 in nine different batting categories. Dawson is first in the Big Ten in total bases (126), second in home runs (12), third in triples (4), fourth in slugging (.581), fifth in doubles (17), seventh in walks (33), eighth in RBI (41), ninth in stolen bases (16) and in runs scored (44). In B1G games, “RD4” is first in homers (6), second in total bases (56) and third in slugging (.596). He is the first OSU player to have at least 40 doubles, 20 home runs and 40 stolen bases in OSU career and leads all active Buckeyes with 100 career RBI.
Tully, from Elkhart, Ind., earns his second career All-Big Ten honor after being named a second team honoree and 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The Buckeyes’ Friday night starter is 7-3 with a 2.31 ERA (second-best in the league) and 71 strikeouts in 93.2 innings pitched. He’s collected a team-high nine quality starts in 14 nods this season with an impressive 4.1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Tully is second in wins (7), fifth in innings pitched (93.2), seventh in batters struck out looking (26) and tenth in strikeouts (71) and opposing batting average (.228). In league games, the OSU lefty ranks fifth in ERA (2.09) and 10th in strikeouts (41). His career ERA sits at 2.85, good fourth-best in program history and is third in fewest walks allowed (42).
The No. 4 seed Buckeyes face No. 5 seed Michigan to open the Big Ten Tournament at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The contest will be broadcasted live on BTN. Fans can listen on AM 1460 ESPN or on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
