Ohio State at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational
- This year marks the first time that the Buckeyes have hosted the Jack Nicklaus Invitational since they won the stroke play event in the 2014-15 season where it was played at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
- The last time that the Buckeyes got to compete at Muirfield Village goes even further back to the 2012-13 season.
- This is the first time in recent memory that the Jack Nicklaus Invitational has been a match play event rather than stroke play.
The Format
- Match play with six players per team.
- One point per match and if the overall team match is tied at 3-3, the games committee will determine the tiebreaker.
- The coaches will set their 1-6 order by Sunday evening and that order will be used throughout the day on Monday.
- There will be three tee times per match in both the first and second rounds on Monday.
- The coaches will then have a chance to change their order prior to Tuesday’s final round.
The Course
- Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack Nicklaus. The land was acquired in 1966, but construction did not begin until July 28, 1972. The golf course is situated on 220 acres, which includes an 11-acre driving range. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Nicklaus scored a six-under par 66, which stood as the course record until 1979. Along with hosting the prestigious Memorial Tournament, the course has also hosted the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1987 Ryder Cup Matches, the U.S.G.A’s 1992 United States Amateur Championship, the 1995 Wendy’s Three-Tour Challenge, and the 1998 Solheim Cup.
Buckeye Backdrop
- The team split up again this last week, sending five players to the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club, and three individuals to the Gordin Classic at Columbus Country Club.
- In Fort Worth, at the Nike Collegiate, Ohio State struggled in the first round but were brought back into contention by seniors Will Grimmer and Daniel Wetterich.
- Will Grimmer finished the tournament two under par, putting together three stellar rounds of 72-67-69 to secure fifth place and earn his second top-5 finish of the season.
- At the Gordin Classic, Grant Engle led the way for the individuals, shooting five under, 68-71, in the final two rounds of the tournament to earn 16th place and his first career top-20 finish.
