Doug Calland has been a member of the Ohio State athletic training staff since 1995 and currently serves as Associate Athletic Director for Sport Performance, with oversight of the football program and all aspects of athletic training across Ohio State Athletics. He has played a central role in shaping the department’s sports medicine infrastructure, including the construction phases of the athletic training center in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.Â
Calland’s career in athletic medicine spans more than four decades and includes leadership roles at Oklahoma State and the University of Washington before his return to Columbus. Prior to joining Ohio State, he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Oklahoma State, where he worked with wrestling and football, and later spent 11 years at Washington working primarily with football and men’s basketball. He also completed an NFL internship with the Pittsburgh Pirates Rookie League team and an internship with the Buffalo Bills while in graduate school.Â
A Columbus native and Whetstone High School graduate, Calland earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in health education from Ohio State in 1981 and later completed his master’s degree in educational administration from Oklahoma State in 1983. As an undergraduate at Ohio State, he worked four years on the athletic training staff and gained experience with multiple sports, including football.Â
During his Ohio State tenure, Calland has overseen the football program since 2000, was named co-head athletic trainer in 2005 and head athletic trainer in 2007. He was also recognized in 2026 with the Doug Boersma Distinguished Big Ten Athletic Medicine Award, which honors exceptional service, leadership and commitment to advancing athletic medicine in the conference.Â
Calland is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association. He serves on the NATA National Honors and Awards Committee and the NFL/Collegiate Athletic Trainer Committee, and he also teaches in Ohio State’s School of Allied Medical Professions. Â
