COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore sprinter Zach Holmes was named co-Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week for his efforts in the team’s season-opening win over Kenyon last week.

Holmes, from Houston, Texas, and Lamar High School, had a three-win afternoon in Ohio State’s 54th consecutive dual meet win over another Ohio school last Saturday. He captured top honors in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.95 and then followed that performance with another winning effort in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 45.22. Holmes earned his third victory of the night in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team finished with a time of 1:22.21.

“Zach Holmes was awesome against Kenyon,” Ohio State coach Bill Wadley said. “I am very pleased that he is swimming this fast at this time of year.”

This marks Holmes’ second Big Ten weekly honor as he was also Swimmer of the Week last year as a freshman (Feb. 16, 2010).

Holmes and the Buckeyes – men’s and women’s teams plus diving – are back in action Friday with a co-ed, double dual meet against the mens’ and women’s squads from Cleveland State and Denison. Start time at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is 5:30 p.m. and admission is free.
