COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (11-15 overall, 2-12 Big Ten) earned their second Big Ten victory of the season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Northwestern (8-17, 2-12) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a match-high 20 points recording a match-high 18 kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks. Northwestern’s Naomi Johnson, Chelsy Hyser and Sabel Moffett shared team-high honors for the Wildcats with nine points each. Johnson and Hyser recorded nine kills each with Moffett adding eight kills and two assist blocks.

After eight ties in set one, the score was 14-14. A kill by Kelli Barhorst and a Northwestern error gave Ohio State at 16-14 lead. A Brittani Gray kill and a Wildcat error moved the score to 17-15. A Hyser kill cut the lead to one at 17-16. Buckeye kills from Kaila Calhoun and Dull gave the Buckeyes a three-point lead at 19-16. After an OSU error, two Dull kills and a Barhorst block opened a 22-17 Buckeye lead. Wildcat kills from Gray and Ariel Baxterbeck and a Northwestern error moved the score to 23-19. Ohio State reached set point with a Dull kill at 24-19. Wildcat kills from Hyser and Baxterbeck stopped two set points to cut the OSU lead to 24-21. Ohio State closed out the set with a Calhoun kill at 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .516 in the set to .278 for the Wildcats.

Set two saw Ohio State break a 2-2 tie with kills from Betsy Hone and Dull to take a 4-2 lead. A Johnson kill stopped the run at 4-3. Three Northwestern errors and a Dull ace serve gave Ohio State an 8-3 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to six several times and held a 23-17 lead after a Wildcat error. Kills from Moffett and Johnson cut the Buckeye lead to four at 23-19. Ohio State reached set point at 24-19 with a Barhorst kill. Northwestern, with a Moffett kill, stopped the set point at 24-20. The Buckeyes closed out the set at 25-20 with a Barhorst solo block to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .464 for the set to .448 for Northwestern.

Northwestern held a 1-0 lead in set three off a Moffett kill. The Buckeyes responded with kills from Dozier, Hone and Dull and a Dozier ace serve to take a 4-1 lead. Northwestern cut the margin to two with a Johnson kill. A Wildcat error and a Dull kill made it 6-2, Ohio State. Wildcat kills from Johnson and Baxterbeck and one from Dull moved the score to 7-4. A Calhoun kill and an Allie Schwarzwalder-Dozier block made it 9-4. Gray, with a kill, cut the Ohio State lead to 9-5. A Wildcat error and a Hone kill took the lead to six at 11-5. A Moffett-Gray block by the Wildcats made it 11-6. Two Northwestern errors, a Dozier-Hone-Dull block and a Dull kill opened the Buckeye lead to nine at 15-6. Ohio State reached match-point with a Hone kill at 24-17. A Northwestern error ended the set at 25-17 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 sweep in the match. Ohio State hit .250 for the set to .091 for the Wildcats.

Ohio State hit .422 in the match to .265 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 45-41 advantage in kills and a three-to-one edge in ace serves. The Wildcats gave up 10 service errors to five for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 36-25 margin in digs with OSU’s Hone recording a match-high 10. At the net, Ohio State had a 6.5 to three edge in team blocks. OSU’s Barhorst recorded a match-high four total blocks with two solo and two assist blocks. Buckeye Hone posted a match-high 36 assists for Ohio State. Northwestern’s Elyse Glab recorded 34 for the Wildcats.

The Buckeyes will make their third appearance on the Big Ten Network next Wednesday when they travel to face No. 20 Michigan (20-6, 8-6) in Cliff Keen Arena. Ohio State then returns home Saturday to host Michigan State (13-12, 5-9) in St. John Arena. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
