COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (11-17 overall, 2-12 Big Ten) dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) decision to Michigan State (14-13, 6-10) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a team-high 16 points while Kelli Barhorst had a career-high 15.5. Dull and Barhorst shared match-high honors with 13 kills each. Dull added two solo and two assist blocks and Barhorst had a solo and three assist blocks. Michigan State’s Vanessa King posted a match-high 16.5 points with 12 kills, two solo blocks and five assists. Kyndra Abron added 13.5 points with 12 kills, a solo block and one assist block.

With set one tied at 17-all, a Michigan State error and a Lisa Prang ace serve gave Ohio State a 19-17 lead. Abron, with a kill cut the lead to 19-18. A Kristen Dozier kill made it 20-18, OSU. Two Megan Schatzle kill tied the set at 20. The Spartans would score the final five points, the last from an Abron solo block to win the set, 25-20. Michigan State hit .281 in the set to .250 for the Buckeyes.

Set two stayed close with 16 ties and nine lead changes. Tied at 20, a Dull kill gave OSU a 21-20 lead. King tied the set at 21 with a kill. Michigan State took a 22-21 lead with a Schatzle kill. A Chelsea Noble kill tied the set at 22. With a Kaila Calhoun kill and a Spartan error, Ohio State reached set point at 24-22. An Abron kill stopped the point at 24-23. Barhorst, with a kill, ended the set at 25-23 to tie the match at one set each. The Buckeyes hit .412 in the set to .289 for Michigan State.

Tied at 12 in set three, kills from Barhorst and Allie Schwarzwalder and blocks from Dozier and Calhoun-Schwarzwalder gave Ohio State a 16-12 lead. A Natalie Emro kill and two OSU errors cut the lead to 16-15. A Dozier kill made it 17-15. A Spartan block by King and Emro and an OSU error tied the set at 17. Tied at 20, a Carli Weiler ace serve and a Schatzle-Vineece Verdun block gave Michigan State a 22-20 lead. OSU made it 22-21 with a Calhoun kill. Two Emro kills made it set point at 24-21. Ohio State with a Schwarzwalder kill and a Calhoun-Schwarzwalder block stopped two set point to cut the margin to one at 24-23. A Buckeye error ended the set, 25-23, for the Spartans to give Michigan State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Spartans hit .312 for the set to .241 for the Buckeyes.

With set four tied a six, Michigan State had a 9-3 run to take a 15-9 lead. Ohio State responded with an 8-3 and with a Dozier kill tied the set at 18. An Emro kill, an OSU error and a King block gave the Spartans a 21-18 lead. A Michigan State error made it 21-19. An Emro-King block for the Spartans and a Dull-Dozier block for the Buckeyes made it 22-20. Two king kills made it 24-20 and match point for Michigan State. The Buckeyes stopped the first match point with a Barhorst kill. A King kill closed out the set at 25-21 to give Michigan State a 3-1 victory in the match. The Spartans hit .216 in the set to .059 for Ohio State.

Michigan State hit .273 for the match to .240 for the Buckeyes. The Spartans had a 62-52 margin in kills and a 3-1 edge in ace serves. Michigan State gave up 11 service errors to six for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 47-36 advantage in digs with Allyson Karaba collecting a match-high 18 for the Spartans. OSU’s Noble posted a team-high 12. At the net, Ohio State had an 11-10 edge in team blocks. MSU’s King posted a match-high seven total blocks with two solo and five assists. Buckeye setter Betsy Hone recorded a match-high 46 assists in the match while Emro had 44 for Michigan State.

Ohio State travels next week to Iowa and Minnesota for matches. The Buckeyes face the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. Friday and the Golden Gophers at 1 p.m. Sunday.
