Buckeyes move to 2-1 in 2009; look to South Carolina next weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 32 Ohio State women’s tennis team (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) swept Eastern Kentucky (2-1, 0-0 OVC), 7-0 Sunday evening at the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center in the third and final match of the opening weekend.

Angela DiPastina made it a clean 3-for-3 sweep for her this weekend in singles by knocking off Myriem Mhirit in No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Kelsey Haviland sent Anouk Faure to a 6-0, 6-2, loss in No. 4 singles. Christina Keesey translated a first set white washing into her first win of 2009 by defeating Anais Hamel at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-3.

Kirsten Flower picked up her second singles of the weekend by dropping Svetlana Pimenova 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 singles while Cami Hubbs beat Alexandra Sitnikova, 6-3, 7-5, in Hubbs’ first career turn at the No. 2 singles spot. Julie Blackmore finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Nadja Barz at the No. 3 spot.

Keesey and Hubbs continually fended off match points at No. 1 doubles, coming from 7-5 down to tie the match at 7-7 and force a tiebreaker. It was all Ohio State in the tiebreaker, as Hubbs and Keesey cruised to an 8-7 (1) win.

Blackmore and Paloma Escobedo dispatched Jemma Euers and Faure in No. 2 doubles, 8-3, while Bartz and Hamel were unable to stop Flower and DiPastina in No. 3 doubles, where the Buckeyes prevailed, 8-0.

Ohio State returns to action next Saturday in Durham, N.C., in the ITA National Indoors Qualifier, as they take on South Carolina in the first of two weekend matches.
